Juvenile Notes, 5th May 2008

National Honour for John Mc Grath
On Saturday and Sunday last the annual convention of Athletics Ireland was held in Dublin.  During the election of officers West Waterford’s John Mc Grath was elected national chairman of the juvenile committee of Athletics Ireland.  This election was a personal triumph for John and is a great honour for his club West Waterford and all in the club wish him well in his new position.

Credit Union Award for Elma Nugent
The latest West Waterford athlete to by honoured with a Credit Union award is Elma Nugent who will be presented with the monthly award for March on Monday next.  During the month of March Elma finished second in the Munster and All Ireland Mountain Running Championships and led the Ard Scoil to the time events in both competitions.  This was the first occasion the Ard Scoil won the senior team title at national level. To finish off the month Elma won the junior 1500m at the Kilmacow Open Sports.

East Munster Schools Championship Results
The first day of the East Munster Schools Championships was held on Wednesday last with the running of the girls events.  The local schools were all in action and figured among the medal winners.  The first three in each event qualified for the Munster Championships, which will be held in Limerick on Saturday May 17th. Kate Veale St. Augustines had a double winning both the junior 1500m and walk.  A double was also recorded by Zoe Scanlon Ard Scoil who won both the inter girls Discus and Javelin with a personal best throw in each event.  Zoe also added a bronze medal in the shot. There were also wins for Claire Collins Ard Scoil in the under 16 mile and Claire also placed second in the inter high jump where she cleared 1m50. Meg Fitzgerald St. Augustines took gold in the inter hammer with a record throw of 32m.44. There was gold for Leann Herlihy in the junior long jump and she also won bronze in the high jump. Kate Hickey St Declans was the winner of the minor girls shot and she moved up to junior for the discus where she finished second just 10cms ahead of Ciara Scanlan Ard Scoil who earlier in the day had won the junior girls hammer with a fine throw of 24m32.

Lisa Houlihan St. Augustines finished second in both the 80m Hurdles and the triple jump and there was also silver for the St. Augustines junior girls team in the relay. Lorraine O’Neill St. Augustines finished second in the junior hammer as did Clodagh Gallagher Ard Scoil in the under 16 mile. There were bronze medals for Siobhan Nugent (Shot), Colleen Whelan (800m), Jenny Hurley (1500m) Rebecca Maher (mile) and Paulina Juzyszyn(high jump) who all represented the Ard Scoil and by Rachel Phelan (triple jump) Olga Conroy (hammer) Louise O’ Neill (hammer) Dana Dudakova (hammer) all representing St. Augustines.  Aileen Gallagher came with a late sprint to snatch third place for the Ard Scoil minor girls team.
Next Wednesday the boys’ section of the East Munster Championships will be held at the RSC starting at 11am.  The first three in each event will qualify for the Munster Championships.

Primary Schools Western Finals
On Thursday night it will be the turn of the primary school athletes to take to the track for the Western Finals.  Qualifying rounds have been held over the last few weeks and on Thursday the finals for both the big and small schools will take place. A list of all the qualifiers can be found on the west Waterford website.  With over seventy races to be run it is essential that the first race gets under way at 6.30. Call up for the under 8 races will start at 6.15 and we ask parents and children to come early as parking in St. Augustines will be on a first come basis.

Welcome to our French Friends
In November last year the juvenile club had a wonderful trip to Paris on Thursday next we welcome to Dungarvan our French hosts the Le Gal family and their friends and wish them a very happy sojourn in west Waterford.
