WEST WATERFORD ATHLETIC CLUB JUVENILE NOTE

Suberb Jumping , Throwing and Walking at All Ireland Schools Championships

There were some fantastic performances by West Waterford athletes at the All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships held in Tullamore last Saturday. Representing Ard Scoil, St Augustines and St. Declans they walked , jumped and threw their way into medals across all age groups. The events got under way at 9am and first in action was Claire Collins (Ardscoil). Last year Claire came very close to the medals but lost out on countback this proved to be a different story with Claire the only athlete to go clear on her first attempt at every height up to and including 1m55 and eventually went on to claim her first Irish Schools title at 1m58. As the high jump was coming to a close the walkers were gearing up for action in the Junior walk Aoife Kiely (Ard Scoil) finished 7th in her first all Ireland appearence. Kate Veale (St. Augustines) was soon on her way to victory with another record breaking performance completing the 2000m in 8m45secs at this rate Jamie Costin better warch out! Unluckiest of all was Joe Conway (St. Augustines) who seemed to have victory in his grasp in the Inter boys race only to be disqualified for lifting in the final straight such are the trials and tribulations of walkers. In the throwing events Kate Hickey won St Declans first medal of the championships when finishing third in the junior girls discus. Zoe Scanlon (Ard Scoil) had to pull out all the stops and throw a personal best of 35m99 to add the inter girls discus title to the junior title she won two years ago. Lisa Houlihan (St. Augustines) also had a personal best performance in the inter girls pole vault clearing 2m80 for the first time. Later in the day Thomas Houlihan again cleared 4m50 to equal the senior boys record and win the pole vault in convincing style. In the junior girls high jump Laura Connors (Ard Scoil) recorded another personal best clearing 1m35 for the first time, while Aine Power came close to her best in the junior girls triple jump. Well done to all the West Waterford athletes who competed.

Munster under 9-13 next weekend

Some of our younger athletes will be in action in Templemore on Saturday and Sunday next. The under 9,10,and 11 girls will compete on Saturday while the under 10 and 11 boys will compete on Sunday. As these events are team events it is important that everyone selected travels or their team will be unable to compete. The events for the under 12 and 13’s wil be held over both days so some will be in action on both days. Check at training this week about bus time on Saturday and also check your events and partners.

Munsters under 14-19

The entries for this event close this week so make sure you contact Mary Ashe by Wednesday if you intend to compete at this championship which will be held in Waterford on Sat 20th and Sunday 21st of June.

The juvenile committee would like to express their sincere smypathy to the Palmer and Moore families on the untimely death of Catherine last weekend.
