Four Individual and Five Team Titles at County Championships

Individual titles for Sheena Mc Guickan, Sinead Flynn, Kate Veale and David Earley and team titles for the girls under 12 and 16 and the boys under 14, 16 and 18 were the highlights of the first day of the county championships. A large number of athletes from all clubs in the county were present in the Friary for the county championships under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and with the great weather of late conditions were ideal for some very fast and competitive races. Shenna Mc Guickan got us off to a great start with a win in the under 8 girls. This was followed by the under 8 boys where we had Oisin O’Riordan in 5th and Alan Curran 8th. The under 10 girls were second in the team race and they were led home by Aine Flynn in 3rd place. In the boys race Aidan O’ Brien 5th led his team to third place. Sinead Flynn added the under 12 title to the under 11 she won last year and with Kate Mc Grath 2nd, Lorna Cummins 6th and Chloe Fennell 8th they easily won the team title in the biggest race of the day. Micheal Power 3rd led the under 12 team to the silver medals and there was also a second place finish for the under 14 girls team. The boys under 14 went one better and with Sean Curran 3rd, Tholm Reddy 4th, Shane O’Riordan 5h and Richard Casey 6th easily collected the gold medals. There was a clean sweep by West Waterford athletes in the under 16 girls with a win for Kate Veale and Lucy O’ Brien 2nd, Una Mc Grath 3rd and Aine Power 4th they won all the individual medals and the team prize. The boys under 16 also completed a one two with David Earley winning gold and Robbie Mulligan the silver with Einne O’Cathasaigh 7 and Alex Lai 8 they also won the team event. In the final race of the day Brian Hallissey 2nd led the boys under 18 to gold and he was ably backed up by Lughaidh O’ Mahoney 4th, Darragh O’ Riordan 5th and Joe Conway 6th.

Under 16: Kate Curran 7, Aoife Kiely 8, Emer Duff 9, Kayleigh Norris 10.

Boys:. Conor O’ Donovan 9.

 

Well done to all the West Waterford athletes who turned out in such numbers for this event we look forward to seeing you all in action again next Sunday in the under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17.

 

Training will continue on Wed and Fri at 6pm in the Friary and new members are always welcome.

 

The juvenile committee would like to extend their condolences to Chloe Lake and her family on the untimely death of her father Tony.
