West Waterford’s under 12 Girls are Munster Champions
Last weekend West Waterford hosted the Munster Cross Country Championships. Thousands of athletes from all over Munster converged on the Friary for an exciting days cross-country. The overcast skies looked ominous but one short shower before the start softened the ground making it ideal for cross-country running. The course as usual was well laid out by Bro. Lennon and his helpers with fine wide starts to cater for the large numbers in the races. West Waterford had one of their largest entries at a Munster Championship with almost seventy athletes competing across ten races. The highlight of the day was the team performance of the under 12 girls who captured the inter club title. The team was led home by Sinead Flynn who made a brave bid to defend the Munster title she won last and with 100m to go it looked as if she might just do that but then her old rival Jennifer Hennessey came with a powerful last minute sprint to snatch victory on the line. These two athletes have battled against each other all summer long with Sinead getting the better on those occasions and we look forward to seeing them in action again in the All Ireland next month. Sinead was followed home by Kate Mc Grath in 3rd place, this was a huge improvement on last years performance where Kate finished 24th. Chloe Fennel who is an under eleven athlete also had a great run to finish 13th just missing an individual medal and with Lorna Cummins finishing 24th is was clear the team would be in the medal shake up. The news that West Waterford had won the team title from Kilmurray Ibrikan and Youghal was greeted with great excitement. The other two members of the team who have also qualified for the All Ireland are Bronagh Condon and Niamh Leamy. This was a great result for Bronagh who was competing in her first Munster Championship. Rachel Wyley was another who had a good run in this race finishing ahead of several of her club mates who had beaten her the previous week in the county championships.  In the inter county event Waterford finished second behind Clare and Sinead, Kate Chloe and Lorna were all scoring members of that team.

Individual Medals for Jerome Power and Sean Curran
Jerome Power was the first of West Waterford’s medal winners. Jerome had a great run to finish in fifth place and collect his first individual Munster medal. Both Jerome and Aidan O’ Brien scored on the Waterford team but the team finished just outside the medals in 4th place. The girls team also finished in 4th place. Most of the girls competing for West Waterford in the under 10 race are also under 9 and last Sundays experience will benefit them when they come to compete in the under 9 race in two weeks time. Running out of his age in the under 14 race Sean Curran put in an excellent performance to finish 10th, claim an individual medal and book his place for the all Ireland.

County Medal for Eoin O’ Brien
In the boys under 12 race Waterford finished second in the inter county contest and Eoin O’ Brien was a scoring member of the county team. Eoin had a fine run to finish 22nd in a race that had over 100 competitors. We also had several under 11 competitors in this race and they too will benefit from this experience.

Bronze Medals for Cliona Ryan and Aisling Prendergast
At last years championships the Waterford time just missed out on the medals, this year however they all upped their performances and finished in third place to win the bronze medals. Cliona Ryan and Aisling Prendergast were among the scoring members of the Waterford team Cliona finishing 28th and Aisling just behind in 29th. This was a huge improvement from Aisling who had finished 53rd last year. The club team finished in 5th place. There was also some excellent running from the boys under 14 with Tholm Reddy moving up from 32nd last year to 23rd this year and newcomer Seamie Fennell in 33rd place. Both the club and county finished 5th.

Silver Medals for Girls under 16
Kate Veale put in a tremendous run to take second in the girls under 16 race. Conscious of the fact that there were some very fast finishers in the race Kate tried to open up a gap in the middle part of the race and was still in the lead as she turned into the home straight by she was overhauled by the fast finishing Amy O’ Donoghue and finished second an improvement of two places on last year. With some great running from here team mates Lucy O’ Brien, Aine Power and Kate Curran the team finished second and qualified for the All Ireland. Despite a great run by Robbie Mulligan which saw him move up from 39th place last year to 15th this year there were no medals fro Waterford in the under 16 boys race.

Bronze for under 18 Boys
We had four competitors in the under 18 boys event and they all scored on the Waterford team which was third in the inter county event they also finished third in the inter club contest behind Ennis Track and Togher. Darragh O’ Riordan was back to his best form and led the team home in 19th place. Well done to all our competitors and a special thank you to the many parents and members of the juvenile and senior club who turned out in large numbers to steward the event and ensure the smooth running of all the races.
