Juvenile Notes, 7th June 2010

The first of four days of Munster club championships took place on Sunday last at Castleisland Co. Kerry. A small group of athletes made the long journey to compete. Cian O’ Riordan, Sean Ronayne and Conor Brown took part in the under 11 team championships. They took part in the long jump, ball throw and long jump events. Best on the day was Cian who ran a great race in the 500m to finish second in his heat. Sean despite being ill during the week was determined to take part and finished 5th in his race. Overall the team finished 4th in the 500m, 8th in the ball throw and 10th in the long jump.

West Waterford athletes were in action representing all the local schools in Tullamore at the All Ireland Championships last Saturday.  There were four gold medal winners on the day. Kate Veale St Augustines had another record-breaking win in the inter girls walk. The Houlihan brothers Thomas and Laurence won the senior and inter boys’ pole vaults with Thomas adding 1cm to the record he equalled last year.  Zoe Scanlon representing Ard Scoil was the winner of the senior girls discus and also won bronze in the shot putt. Claire Collins Ard Scoil won a silver medal in the high jump, as did Lisa Houlihan St Augustines in the senior girls pole vault. Ciara Scanlan Ard Scoil added over three metres to her personal best to finish third in the inter girls hammer and Kate Hickey St Declans throw over 30 metres for the first time to finish third in the inter girls discus. 

Success for All Local Schools at All Ireland Schools Championships

Next Sunday we will have Claudia Quarry and Ciara Mc Kenna in action in the team championships under 10. Eoin Dwyer will compete in the high jump and discus, Richard Casey and Shane O’Riordan in the walk under 14, Sean Curran and Tholm Reddy in the 800m, Sheamie Fennell high jump discus and 800m, Alan mc Mahon under 15 triple jump, Ciaran Deein the under 16 walk and Kate Veale and Aoife Kiely in the under 17 walk. 

Sheamie Fennell has improved with every outing this year and he finished 4th in both the shot and long jump losing out by a couple of cms in each case but it was a different story on the track. Sheamie won his heat of the 200m 1n 25.97 and further in the final running 25.60 to take gold in his first Munster club championships. Eoin Dwyer made it through to the final of the javelin where he finished 6th. In the 1500m Sean Curran ran 5.04.37 to finish 8th with Tholm 7secs behind in 11th and Sean O’Riordan 16th in 5.28.56. Laura Connors was the only girls competing on the day and she cleared 1m 40 in the high jump to finish second and win her first medal in the Munster club championships.
