Munster Championships on Sunday Next Nov 12th

Next weekend we have a large group of athletes headed for Two Mile Borris for the Munster Championships under 9,11,13,15,17 and 19. Be careful what you put in your Sat Nav or you will end up in the village trying to find the course. Its best to head for the Horse and Jockey and turn left on to the old Cork /Dublin road and the venue will be on your right hand side just a few miles up the road. Leave about 15mins to get from the main road to the parking as there is always a slow queue from the entrance to the parking. We will meet @10am to give everyone a chance to walk the course before the event gets underway.

Great Day at Tramore Racecourse for County B Championships

We headed to Tramore Racecourse on Sunday last for the county B Championships. Twenty three athletes from West Waterford took part in the event. Some had the benefit of running in the A championships and you could see how the experience helped to improve their performances. We also had several athletes competing in cross country for the first time and all completed the hilly course.

Win for Etain in the Girls under 9 Race

The under 9’s were in action first and because of the soft nature of the ground the athletes were not allowed to walk the course beforehand. The girls under 9 was an out and back course where they ran down the hill then turned around a cone and had a long pull back up the hill for the finish. Both our girls put in a great run up the hill with Etain moving into 3rd then second and with a sprint to the line took the win. Harriet Byrne also put in a great spurt up the hill to move from 9th to 7th place.

Three in the Top Six in the under 9 Boys

We had some great running from the boys under 9 with five in the top ten and three in the top six. It could easily have been one more as Andy was leading the race when he did what they were told and turned at the cone to come back unfortunately they were the cones for the finish and there was another set further down the track and he had to watch as the field went past him in the other direction. Ruy de Arco Calva put in a great sprint on the hill up to claim the silver medal with David Kiely not far behind in 3rd. Richard Ahern got up to take 5th place and Tadhg Kinsella and Billy O’Riordan also made it into the top ten.

Win for Leah Kiely in the girls under 11Race

The under 11 course was much like the under 9 an out and back course with a longer downhill stretch and of course a longer uphill stretch too. Leah took on the hill up with great gusto stretching her lead with every stride to come home a clear winner with Darcy Lavan having a great run also to come home 5th. Sinead Houlihan, Indie McDonnell and Mollai Ní Breathnach were all testing out cross country racing and came home 9th, 10th and 11th.

Silver for Tiernan and Bronze for Colm in the under 11 Boys Race

The under 11 boys put in a great finish on the hills with Tiernan Hogan chasing the leading Tramore athlete and Colm O’Muiri chasing Tiernan. Teirnan crossed the line to take the silver medal and Colm took the bronze. Rian Flavin and Jamie Kiely made it into the top ten and just behind them was Seb Byrne in 11th with Vaughan Daly a couple of place behind in 15th and Tomás Higgins having his first run with the club in 17th.

Natalie, Kevin and Peter All in the Medals

The under 13 race was run over the full lap of the racecourse with a very long and steep uphill section and also a long pull to the finish. Natalie Barry had to work hard over the 1500m to ensure she stayed in the top six and was still sprinting on the way to the line. Peter Ahern led out the boy’s race and did all the work up the steep hill. As the race moved to the faster downhill section he was overtaken by several athletes including club mate Kevin Russell who put in a great sprint in the home strait to take the silver medal and Peter ran strongly to the finish to take 4th place and end a very successful day for the club.
