First Munster Medals for Etain and Colm

The Munster B Championships were held in Riverstick Co Cork on Sunday. This championship is growing stronger every year and there were big field in all the races. As with all the races this year underfoot conditions were soft  and the hilly terrain made it a tough challenge for our young athletes.

First in action was Etain Ní Mhurchadha who is making steady progress all year. She put in a strong run to finish 30th . Etain was a scoring member of the Waterford team that finished 3rd in the inter county event. This is Etain’s first Munster medal.

Up next were the under 11 girls with a field of almost 100 athletes. Sinead Houlihan put in a strong performance to finish 71st and Sinead Donnelly who was running a year out of age finished 89th.

Colm O’Muiri completed the 1000m course in just over 6mins to finish in 24th place in the boys under 11 race. Waterford had a strong team in this event with six athletes in the top thirty. Colm was the third scoring athlete on the Waterford team that finished 3rd in the inter county competition.

West Waterford’s top finisher of the day was Ava Kiely who finished 15th in a very competitive field dominated by Cork athletes who had eight athletes in the first ten finishers. Ava was the first Waterford girl home in the race. There was a big spread of athletes from all six counties in the boys under 13 and Fergus Donnelly was the second Waterford athlete home in 26th place.

Our final competitor of the day was Oisin Whelan in the under 15 boys race. Oisin was out of action for all of the cross country season so it was good to see him back for the last Munster race of the season. Oisin finished 23rd in the race.

Well done to all seven athletes who made the trip to Riverstick to represent their club and county.
