Busy Weekend as athletes compete in Dublin, Nenagh and Templemore

West Waterford young athletes had a hectic weekend with athletes competing cross country in Dublin, race walking in Nenagh and throwing in Templemore.

Gold for Sophie and Doireann and Silver for Eabha in Nenagh

The final day of the 123.ie Munster Indoor Championships was held on Sunday last in Nenagh. West Waterford had three athletes in action and all finished in podium places. First in action was Sophie Beresford in the under 15 walk. Sophie walked steadily at a fast pace and covered the 1km distance in 5.06.56 to take the gold medal. There was also gold for Doireann Hickey in the under 19 walk. Doireann covered the 1.5km distance in 7.55.73 and Eabha Hickey finished second to Lusai de Faoite of Kenmare in the girls under 18 walk finishing in 8.39.07. All three girls qualify for the All Ireland on April 6th.

Silver for Michalina in Templemore Throws Fest

We had two athletes in action in Templemore at their annual throwing festival on Saturday last. This event has become very popular and last week end attracted throwers from Munster Leinster and Ulster. Michalina Goclik was first up in the girls under 16 shot. Each of her throws was better than her seasons opener in Nenagh two weeks ago and she finished in 4th place with a new personal best of 7m99. In the afternoon she competed in the discus. This was her first time throwing the 1kg discus and she finished in 2nd place with a throw of 20m71. Saoirse Quinn opened her season with a throw of 27.71 to finish 4th in the girls under 18 discus.

Fia de Paor best placed of West Waterford athletes in Dublin

The 123.ie All Ireland Schools cross country was held over a tough and varied course in Tymon Park Dublin on Saturday last. Competition was tough as all the races were run at a very fast pace and Leinster and Ulster athletes dominated the events. West Waterford had three athletes competing for St Augustines College, Fia de Paor, Grainne Moore, Noah Commins and also Naoise MacMhurchadha representing Meanscoil san Nioclas. All four athletes had qualified for the event via the Munster School championships. First in action was Fia in the inter girls event. This race set off at a very fast pace and for much of the race Fia was in the second bunch sitting in 10th or 11th place before eventually finishing in 15th place.

In the senior girls Grainne Moore was in the mid 30’s for much of the race and tried to push on in the last few hundred metres to make it into the top 30 and came home in 31st place. Noah Commins started slowly and was back in the 60’s for the first lap but he came through in the latter stages of the race to finish 55th.  Naoise MacMhurchadha found the pace very fast in the senior boys race and he battled through a stitch to finish 70th.

Well done to all the athletes who represented the club last weekend.
