FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE.
UP AND RUNNING FOR SECOND HALF OF WINTER LEAGUE.
Yes were up and running again after our annual Christmas break from the winter league, indeed its now actually 3 weeks since our last outing as we missed that final night before the break due to inclement weather and this was our second cancelation as we also lost another night earlier in the league due to bad weather. Carrying on from where we left off before Christmas our first night back wasn’t a good one as down came the rain, however we still had a good turnout so well done to all who ventured out on the night and a very special thank you to all our team who withstood the elements on a night when you wouldn’t put a milk bottle out, we hope now that it’s all behind us and we can enjoy better running conditions going forward for the remainder of the league. The night was for all a sad occasion as we paid a minutes silent tribute to Dan McGrath who’s untimely passing over Christmas was a complete shock to the community,Danny was for largely all his working life a member of the staff at the sports center, a venue we use on a regular bases and Danny was always at hand to help the club in any way he could indeed he was a member of the club for many years and competed in the club singlet and on at least one occasion competed in the European masters long jump competition,he will be sadly missed by his family and wide circle of friends, may he rest he peace. We had 153 on the long course last Wednesday and leading the pack home was John Hodge in a time of 32.28,John was followed by Mark Flynn 34.43 and 3rd man past the finish post was Alan Hogan 30.13, this was the fastest time recorded on the night, the top 3 finishers last week all run superb times. The ladies were flying also with our first finisher was Karen o’ Connor 43.02 with Maebh Beresford dipping under the 43 minute mark clocking a time of 42.57 to finish 2nd lady while previous league winner Alice Fitzgerald ran a time of 43.00 for 3rd home. Tonight (15th January) is a “Colligan Cup” or “predict your time” night in preparation for the upcoming Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup next Sunday over 5 miles in Colligan woods on the 19th January.

The overall tables are starting to take shape in the long course . The current leader is Mike Wyley 46 points ahead of Geraldine Casey 1038 with Sinead Ní Fhaolain in Third a further three points behind 1035.It’s all still very close at this stage with more twists and turns to come.

SHORT COURSE RUNNERS BEAT THE ELEMENTS.
It breezy, wet and cold evening for our runners as they gathered again for the Fordes Daybreak Winter League after the Christmas break. Once again a great crowd of nearly 70 runners gathered in Dungarvan Sports Centre before heading out on the 2.4 mile run. As it was the first night of 2020, we had a good few new people registering along with the league regulars. This section of the league has first timers and beginners in mind and is a manageable distance for most as it covers 2.4 miles in total. Even if you haven’t come along up to now, maybe it’s a challenge you could take on for the New Year. Tonight (15th January) is a “Colligan Cup” or “predict your time” night in preparation for the upcoming Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup over 5 miles in Colligan woods on the 19th January.First on the night was Kevin Sheehan who ran round in 20.13. Kevin was followed by Mark Fitzsimons in 20.14 and Michael Gee in 20.16. Next was our first lady, Carol Pope in 21.00 Cyril Flavin in 23.39. Many excellent times were recorded including- Jimmy Beresford ran 27.15, Joey Miller ran 22.38, Mags Hennessy finished in 28.03 with Siobhan O’Mahony running 22.35. The two Kate Dunfords finished together in 25.12. Sheilanne O’Donoghue will surely break 20 minutes soon having just missed out when running 20.04. Fastest time on the night was recorded by Ciaran Frisby (14.59) and fastest lady was Linda Foley (16.46).Well done to all who took part, and remember newcomers are always welcome. Just come along to Dungarvan Sports centre on Wednesday Night at 6.30 to register – Also thanks to all out Stewards out on the course and our crew in the hall and at the Finish Line.

There is a Winter League T-Shirt as a bonus for anyone that runs 8 nights out of 12 in the league. As there was some nights cancelled pre-Christmas, an extra night will be added to the league, with the league now finishing on 19th February.
29TH ANNUAL MICHEAL ROCHE CARPETS RACE SERIES. race 3.
ALL ROADS THIS SUNDAY LEAD TO THE 32nd ANNUAL KIELY MONUMENTAL COLLIGAN CUP .
The Michael Roche Carpets Series continues this coming Sunday the 19th January with the 32nd Annual Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup. The Juvenile race starts at 11 am. The senior race has a 12 noon start and is over the usual 5 miles Colligan wood circuit and Juveniles will have a single 1-mile circuit to run. The Colligan cup is a unique event in that it is run on a handicap basis where you simply predict your finishing time over a 5 mile run, with the winner being the person who is nearest to that predicted time. This makes the race open to all no matter what your standard is, everyone has the same chance of taking the title. Now in its 32nd year we would like to thank sincerely our sponsor for all of those 32 years David and Margaret Kiely of Kiely Monumental for their on-going support for the local running club West Waterford AC. So for a great fun event on the yearly running calendar Colligan is where you need to be come next Sunday 19th January.
HOW COLLIGAN CUP TIMING SYSTEM WORKS.
We will again this year be determining the outright winner of the Colligan cup by way of our Club chip timing system. The chip timing device is attached to each runners race number and this system will decide who the winner will be for 2020, but as we said the race timing system itself will remain the same as the one Victor Mullins devised 31 years ago. The following is how the handicap timing system works, the run begins when the clock starts with the time of the slowest predicted runner’s time, say 60 minutes. As the clock counts backwards down to zero every runner begins when his or her predicted time shows up on the clock. The runner with the fastest predicted time will be the last runner to start the race. The winner of the Colligan Cup is the runner who is the first person to cross the finish line after the clock reaches zero-it is that simple. All you have to do is get your prediction right. Remember, no watches allowed or music head phones. So if you would like to become part of local athletics history and have your name inscribed on the now famous Colligan plaque which was erected in the wood some years ago by the race sponsor David Kiely of Kiely Monumental come along next Sunday. We must also mention and thank Coillte for their permission and help in letting us hold the race. We urge all going to Colligan on Sunday to please allow plenty of time as parking will be restricted on the road to one side. Please do not park where your car might obstruct the flow of traffic or interfere with the runners. This is a great family event with something for everyone. The Colligan Cup itself will be awarded to the winner of the senior race, while the Shield will be awarded to the first lady finisher. The Victor Mullins cup will be awarded to the runner on the 1st runner on the right side of the clock who is running the event for the very first time. The Juvenile Shield will be presented to the Juvenile winner. The junior race is organized by the club’s juvenile section over one lap of the Colligan circuit and it gets under way at 11AM sharp and this too is a guess your time handicap event. The senior race will start at 12 noon. All are welcome to participate.

18TH ANNUAL KILMACTHOMAS 4.race 4.
The final race in the Michael Roche carpets series will be on Sunday February 16th at 11 a.m., the 18th Annual Kilmacthomas 5. Entries will be taken at the community hall Kilmacthomas at the top of the town with the entry fee being 8 Euro. Shower facilities will also be available in this hall after the event for both men and women. very attractive prize fund will be on offer for the top competitors and plenty of spots for down the field finishers also. Sandwiches and refreshments will be available to all after the event. This is the final race in the Michael Roche carpets race series and presentation of series prizes will take place on the day.
29TH ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE ROAD RACE
Were full steam ahead now for the upcoming race of the year, the 29th annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10. With registration completely full with over 3.500 places filled. We are now nicely assembling a really top class field of elite athletes which will make for the biggest and best race to date. The race is on Sunday February 2nd at 1.30 p.m. All finishers of The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 will receive the now famous West Waterford AC goody bag, plus a Nike dry fit running top will be awarded to all finishers. Shower facilities will be available at the Dungarvan Sports Centre for men, The Fusion centre alongside for Ladies and the Dungarvan Boxing club pavilion (by kind permission) for the ladies showers . All race Goodie bags and Shirts will be awarded when runners cross the finishing line. Presentation of prizes will take place at the Sports centre where teas and sandwiches will be provided. This year’s race once again will see substantial cash prizes for the top runners and bonus cash to the first athlete to break either course record. Substantial cash prizes will follow down throughout the categories. The club committee have been working hard to ensure that the day will go off without a hitch and our hope now is the man above will do his bit by giving us a good day weather wise for the race of the year.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED FOR DUNGARVAN 10
It’s a mammoth task for our club to organise the upcoming Dungarvan 10 mile. We have been fortunate in the past to have had help from club members and also from many outside of the club circle who come along each year to give a few hours of their time. This year we are in need of that same help again and even more, with a much bigger field assembled this year we will be under more pressure in making sure these visitors to our town leave with a good experience of what Dungarvan has to offer and we hope such will be the impression we will make on them that they will want to come back again to visit the town for maybe a longer stay.
