Notes January 29-12
21st ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE ROAD RACE WAS A RESOUNDING
SUCCESS WITH NEW COURSE RECORDS SET
The town of Dungarvan and West Waterford Athletic Club have indeed been firmly established as the home of athletics and premier races after the highly successful staging of their annual 10 mile road race. After months and months of planning behind the scenes, the scene was set for a top class road event which saw the cream of Irish athletes from the four corners of the country converging on the Youghal Road for the most prestigious of road races. It’s only fair to say that the race has all the ingredients for a superb event- a great course, great organisation and all this combined with the tremendous support and goodwill that we at West Waterford have received from all the club members, the locals, the residents and the local businesses which contributed so much to the overall success on the day. Last Sunday’s race epitomised community effort at its best and it was heart-warming to hear all the positive comments from the athletes and the supporters after the race. It was a classic case of “all hands on deck” as so many people came out in droves with offers of help and support and all at the club would like to convey their heart-felt gratitude to all those that helped out in the various roles. It was really and truly appreciated and we hope that everyone is aware that no matter what their role or capacity on the day, it made the day that it was and no doubt all the runners will be back for an even bigger and better event in 2013. Now in its 21st year the race is really going from strength to strength with a grand total of 1261 finishers and this year also had without doubt the highest standard ever, the evidence being that both the men’s and the ladies record were broken once again and it’s a safe bet to predict that next year it will reach new heights again! The race headquarters at the Sport’s Centre was a hive of activity from early in the morning and shortly before 1 pm it was time for all to make their way to the start line. Former Olympian and World Cross Country Champion and Honourary Life member of West Waterford AC, John Treacy was greeted with a loud round of applause when he took to the start line to get proceedings underway as well as to take part in the race. The timing watches were ready, the clocks were all synchronised, the stewards were in place, the spectators were vying for the best view point and so at 1 pm sharp the starting gun signalled the start of what was to be a tremendous and thrilling race with some truly magnificent battles fought through the streets and by-roads of the town. It might have been a day for the ducks earlier on in the morning but it was a day for running at 1 p.m. with conditions absolutely ideal for a race. The women’s race was a foregone conclusion with Maria McCambridge from Letterkenny on the line but the men’s was not as clear cut which added interest to the race and as predicted McCambridge was a clear winner of the ladies and victory for the 2012 race went to Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham who broke the course record by the smallest of margins, a mere one second but a record is a record and he is now the current record holder and we look forward to seeing him back in Dungarvan this time next year to defend his title. In fact, going on today’s success we expect that there will once again be unprecedented demand for this race and only rightly so, roll on 2013!!
SURE WIN FOR SEAN HEHIR AT JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 1O MILE
The list of elite athletes at the starting line made for very impressive reading as there were a number of athletes present, all with the capabilities of equalling if not breaking the course record which was set last year in a thrilling race by Mareks Floresks who clocked 49.26 and so all eyes were on the top athletes to see if this record would fall. From the starting gun there were three athletes who had the record as their target-Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham, Paddy Hamilton of Annadale Striders and Alan O’ Shea of Bantry. These athletes certainly made their intentions known right from the start as the first mile was clocked at 4.44, well inside the course record. The tempo was maintained from there on with the second mile recorded at 4.50. It was from here that Sean Hehir made the decisive move to break away from the group, anxious to stamp his authority on the race which is precisely what he did with another 4.50 for mile 3 and at this stage he was 20 seconds inside the course record while at the same time he would have been aware that there was a lot of work to be done with 7 miles remaining. The fourth mile heading out onto the Bog Road was 5 minutes even and he was well on his own at this stage and as all runners will testify, it’s very lonely out at the front but with the lead car and the clock looming ahead, will and determination is what’s required at this stage which Sean had plenty of. Sean needed to be at the half-way mark at 24.43 to be on target for the record and the clock read 24.29; things were looking good at this stage. The 6th mile was slightly outside 5 minutes with 5.07, but he had those few precious seconds in the tank as they say and at the 10km mark he was at 30.22 and at 7 miles he added a few more seconds in the tank with 4.52 and he clocked 5 minutes even at 8 miles. 2 miles to go and yet the effort had to be maintained, records are often equalled but rarely beaten but Sean didn’t believe in that, he had worked so hard on his own for so long he was not going to throw in the towel now. The lead van had now left to get back to the finish so Sean had just himself and his self-belief and the title for 2013 in mind as he came in the Youghal Road. Shortly after the 9 mile mark, Sean met with the hundreds of supporters on the course who were all eyes on the Dublin athlete and the support and applause he received from these people kept his spirits up and as he turned at the roundabout for the final hurdle, he could hear the words of encouragement from all converged on the main road, the race MC Tony Ryan had indicated to Sean that there were mere seconds left to get to the line and as Tony began the countdown Sean gave a last minute surge and he duly made it to the line quite literally in the nick of time! He had broken the course record by one second and it was a sweet victory for Sean who was absolutely delighted to claim victory for the race as well as being the current record holder. Speaking to Sean after the race, he couldn’t have been more appreciative of the support of the spectators over the last mile; indeed all the runners highly praised the locals who had come out in droves to see the race. With the first athlete home, the battle now began for top 10 positions and what a battle it was with only 2 seconds separating the second and third placed athlete. Paddy Hamilton of Annadale Striders was second 49.47 and he had a job on his hands as hot on his heels was Gary O’ Hanlon of Clonliffe Harriers in 49.49, well done lads. Gary’s club-mate was fourth in 50.21 and he certainly didn’t have it his own way as he was being chased down by Alan O’ Shea who had been in the leading pack and he finished just 6 seconds behind in 50.27. Our own Sandis Bralitis, a former winner of this race many times over finished in 9th place overall and no doubt when he gets back to full form he will dominate once again. Martin McCarthy of West Waterford won second place in the 0/50 category in 59.42, Joe Gough claimed the 0/55 category with 61.13. 84 runners broke the magical hour barrier which included the top 5 women which gives an indicator as to the strength of the competition on the day and is testament to the superb display of all the runners. Other club members to break the hour were Des Feeney, Sean Stilwell and John Leahy. Well done to one and all and it’s all eyes now on who will be the victor for 2013. The category prizes were as keenly contested as the individual prizes, won by athletes from West Waterford, Clonliffe, Letterkenny, St. Finbarr’s, Bilboa, Rathfarnham, Coolquill and Cobh. It was great to see Gerry Forde back in Dungarvan again this year and he once again took the wheelchair category prize in 1.32.56. It’s great to see athletes from clubs far and near compete in all the categories and a sincere well done to one and all, see you all in 2013!

MARIA MCCAMBRIDGE DOMINATES IN THE LADIES RACE TO SMASH COURSE RECORD
Excitement reached fever pitch last week when it was announced that International athlete, Maria McCambridge, had entered the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 and as predicted the course record was well and truly smashed. The standard of the ladies race was of the highest calibre and with many of the country’s elite athletes on the start line it was guaranteed to be a cracker of a race and the ladies duly delivered on this. As well as Maria on the start line there was former winner and course record holder Siobhain O’ Doherty as well as a host of athletes from Dublin and Cork. From the very start Maria went into an early lead as predicted as only a few short months ago she completed in the Dublin marathon looking to seek Olympic Qualification for the marathon so these credentials alone installed her as the athlete to watch. While Maria led out the race, there were plenty others not too far behind looking to keep an eye on her, hoping maybe for a lapse in pace or tempo but such was not to be. Maria maintained the pace throughout and by the half way mark she was well and truly clear and safe so it was left for the remaining females to battle it out for the minor placings. Such was the super effort put in by Maria she finished in 24th place overall from a grand total of 1261 runners and she clocked 55.58 for the 10 mile distance, no mean feat I can assure you. The previous record was 56.28 and at half way Maria just needed to hold her composure to take not just the title but to become the course record holder as well and it was a well worthwhile journey for the Letterkenny athlete and we would like to thank Maria for travelling the distance for the race. It was too close to predict anything outside of the winner with the rest of the ladies and on the day it fell to Lizzie Lee of Leevale who took the honours in a fine time of 57.29 and who knows maybe next year she will be back to give the course record another try. Just under a minute after Lizzie made it home it was the turn of Jill Hodgins to cross the line and she too was well under the hour in a fine time of 58.26. Such was the intensity and competition of the race that the top 5 women were all home well under the hour. The first Dublin athlete home and in fourth place was Ailish Malone of Clonliffe and in fifth place was Siobhain O’ Doherty in 59.07, Siobhain may not have been at her best today but she still remains one of the country’s finest athletes and she will be back better than ever no doubt. Completing the top 6 on the ladies list was Sinead Ní Chonchúir of Eagle AC and she was just 25 seconds outside of the hour and we hope to see her back next year under that magical hour barrier. Victory in the 0/35 category went to our own Corinna Walsh who had a super run and she had to work hard to fight off Ann-Marie Holland as there was just 2 seconds between them, it doesn’t get much closer than that, well done Corinna. The other category winners came from a host of clubs from Munster and beyond and well done to all.

EAGLE A.C. RECORD A DOUBLE WITH LADIES TEAM PRIZE
Eagle AC were out in force at this year’s race as well as last year and they were back to defend their team prize for 2012 and this they achieved with another clear win. Thanks to all at Eagle AC for supporting the race and it was a well-deserved result. Not only did they defend the team prize but they also claimed back-to-back victories in the John Treacy Cup Challenge as well. (See John Treacy Cup Challenge Results) Well done girls, the treble is surely on the cards for next year!

JOHN TREACY CLUB CHALLENGE
The John Treacy club challenge which was first introduced last year has been a major addition to the Dungarvan 10 mile road race. The prize is awarded to the best men’s and ladies club teams and is calculated on the runner’s finishing times so each club’s top three athletes times are calculated with the honours going to the team with the fastest times. We had teams from many corners of the country taking part and many of them would be considered to be very strong and traditional road running clubs. In association with Waterford Sports Partnership and John Treacy, each winning team received the perpetual cups and each scoring team member received beautifully specially inscribed Crystal mementoes of their club’s win. The winners this year in the men’s competition went to Clonliffe Harriers who had a very strong team on the day with their top runners finishing in 3rd, 4th and 20th position which was more than enough to secure victory. Last year, West Waterford took the honours with a combined time of 2.38.19 and this year it was won with a combined time of 2.34.16. Eagle AC were the winners from last year and they were outright winners once again this year in the ladies competition. Their combined time of 3.06.13 was a massive improvement from the 3.17.18 they recorded last year and they will be a force to be reckoned with for 2013 when they will surely be back to record the treble, well done to all. John Treacy was on hand to present the winners with the perpetual cups and beautiful crystal mementoes for each team member. Our thanks go to John Treacy for his involvement here.
THE FLYNN HOTEL GROUP SPECIAL PRIZE
To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race last Sunday The Flynn family of the Park Hotel Dungarvan and The Flynn hotel group donated a weekend for 2, including bed and breakfast and an evening meal to the person who finished the race in 471st place. This was the number John Treacy wore when taking that famous silver medal in the marathon at the LA Olympics. The lucky winner of the prize was Sean Freeman. We hope he enjoys his break at one of the fabulous Flynn hotel group hotels.
OUR PACERS DID A GREAT JOB
For this year’s race we decided to introduce pacers for different time targets and to say they went down a treat was an understatement. In fact as one runner crossed the line her exact comments were –“Do you see those pacers there? They are absolute legends!” All our voluntary pacers to which we are really indebted to did a super job and all took to the job in hand with complete conviction and each and every one of them paced their runners to the second and there were so many delighted runners crossing the line who had beaten a time they had never recorded before. They all praised the efforts and support of the pacers and I know that they would like to convey their sincere thanks to them, West Waterford were delighted that Eoin O’ Riordan and Alan Hickey (70 minutes), Paul Brunnock and Alan Ryan (75 minutes) Pat Dunford and Pat Frisby (80 minutes) Jim Fleming and Liam Kavanagh (85 minutes) and Trevor Walsh and Gerry O’ Connor (90 minutes) volunteered to help out the club in this way and it really added to the race, thanks so much lads, ye were brilliant.
HELP RECEIVED WAS INVALUABLE
The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race was a memorable day for the club and town last Sunday. Despite a somewhat damp evening none the less racing conditions were ideal with no wind at all .It was huge community effort by a large amount of people who volunteered their time and resources helping to make it a day to remember. All our members along with many who are not even directly involved with the club came along and gave us great support, without all of these people it would not have been possible to hold the race at all. West Waterford athletic club were fortunate once again this year to have on board our race organising partners at Waterford Sports Partnership and both Waterford County Council and Dungarvan Town Council, without their great support the event would not have been as successful as it was. We also had great sponsors and support from Glaxosmithkline, Dungarvan Shopping centre, Flahavans, Nike Ireland, Glanbia, Optimum Nutrition, The Park Hotel and the Flynn hotel group, plus many local businesses and individuals who supported the race in various ways. Entries for the race reached the 1.500 limit before Christmas and to be honest we were inundated with requests for entries right up to last Sunday. Going forward from this now we will have a look at next year’s race and have no doubt that 2013 will even be a bigger and better affair. Our sincere thanks go to the man which the race is honouring, John Treacy, for his support to the event. John was on hand to get the runners on their way from our starting line on the Youghal Road and true to form John also participated in the race, he also made himself available to present the winners with their prizes afterwards. To Dungarvan town clerk Joe Flaherty and his staff and the staff of Waterford County Council for their invaluable help ensuring that the course was in top order for the race. To Tom Keith, Danny Mc Grath and Theresa McGrath at Dungarvan Sports Centre which was our race headquarters this year again, a big thanks. To Dungarvan boxing club for the use of their club pavillion our deepest thanks go to them and especially to John Power for all his help. A very very special thanks to our over-cooked catering crew of which there were too many to mention, it was a mammoth task to take on to feed such a huge number of people, but feed them they did, for all their efforts our sincere thanks and especially to all those who made the sandwiches and baked the cakes and brought the biscuits which fed the 1.500 plus hungry runners. To all who donated to and helped to pack the goodie bags on Saturday, a big thanks to you for making yourself available, and to those who lent us tables, chairs and burco boilers etc etc a big thanks. To Albert McGrath who helped in no small way with the goody bag contents again this year. Thanks also go to Liam Lannen for the use of his transport trailer. To all our registrars, recorders, and timekeepers, too many to mention- again invaluable work by you all, many thanks to Des Colbert and company who looked after the chip timing for the event and to all who were looking after the finish area. To Tony Ryan on the P.A. and lead car, to Dirk Baumann for his superb sound system and music, thanks to those who looked after the water stations and for the great job they did in cleaning up the litter after. I must also give special mention to two people for their work with the traffic management and practical help leading up to race day and on the day itself and that's Conor Norris and Jamie Mills. They were working behind the scenes from about Monday and had covered some miles by race day I can tell you. To our motorbike outriders who did a great job, many thanks. We must extend our sincere thanks to Dungarvan Garda for their continued support with this and all our events. Thanks very much to our club administrator Linda Flynn who since taking up her post is doing a terrific job for the club and she did an amount of work for last Sunday’s event. Thanks to the Order of Malta in Tramore for making the trip to Dungarvan for the event. There are many other people to thank for their help on the day especially all the stewards out on the course. What a superb bunch of lads and lassies who gave of their time last Sunday in the very wet conditions for our club. Thanks especially to Tony Ryan who co-ordinated this most important function on race day and as we have said time and time again without our stewards we wouldn't be able to have the race at all. Finally, a huge thank you must go to Ann Dunford who looked after all the entries and enquiries for the race, no mean feat I can tell you, there was no-one more glad to be able to switch her phone off Sunday evening I would say. Both Ann and James Veale gave countless hours in preparation for last Sunday which was done as efficiently as ever. To all I have forgotten to thank we do say a big thanks and well done to you all- and roll on 2013.
ALL ROUNDER SPORTS WINTER LEAGUE
ONLY 3 NIGHTS REMAINING AND IT’S ALL TO PLAY FOR
Including tonight there are just 3 nights remaining in the winter league. Without question this has been the most keenly contested winter league to date as in both the short route and the long route it’s still way too close to call a winner. People are moving up and down the league tables and there are even some runners that moved down a few steps and then moved back up the following week. The points you get each night not only depend on how much you improve but it also depends on how much the runners run as well, so it’s a case of running as fast as you can for the next 3 nights. Try not to go off too hard at the start as you risk running out of steam mid-way, you need to be strong throughout. Newcomers are still welcome every night so come along to the Sports Centre around 7 p.m. in order to be issued with a number and to get a starting time.
DIVISON TABLES ARE NOW LOCKED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE LEAGUE
After the results were made out last week and the division tables sorted out they have now been locked. What this means is that whatever division you are in now is the division you will remain in until the end of the league. If you are now in division 4 then you and the other runners will be battling it out to win that division and the same for the others in the other divisions. The winner is the person with the lowest score so the overall winner may come from any division which is usually division 1 but not always. Remember, it’s possible to gain 60-70 points on any night so the league is far from over; it’s all to play for!!
JAMES O’ DONNELL AND JASON DEE CLOSE THE GAP ON KEVIN HICKEY
It doesn’t seem to matter what starting intervals are used any week as all the runners improved immensely once again. The first runners home in the long route were Louise Hayes (56.29), Maurice Condon (41.06), Pat Fitzgerald (39.17), Paul Casey (44.29) and PJ Curran (54.32). The division tables couldn’t be more exciting as James O’ Donnell who lost control of the overall lead a few weeks ago is slowly but surely narrowing the gap on Kevin Hickey but he is not on his own as he has company in the form of Jason Dee who is also 5 points away from taking control of the division and not too far behind is Luke Cunningham so tonight’s league should be very interesting indeed, it’s way too close to call!!
DIVISION 1
Kevin Hickey 535
James O’ Donnell 540
Jason Dee 540
Luke Cunningham 576
Micheal O’ Chuirrin 606
Michael Dunford 634
Josie Ui Chuirrin 674
Pat Fitzgerald 692
Trevor Walsh 697
Paul Brunnock 705
The other division leaders are Catherine Mooney, Corinna Walsh, Diana Chizhikova, Patrick Riordan, Rita Cronnolly, Ted o’ Leary, Natalie Shaw-Hamilton, Josie Harty and Paschal Proctor
TONY FERNCOMBE IS STILL AT THE TOP BUT MARTINA POWER IS CLOSING IN
The large groups last week certainly helped the runners in the short route to record fast times. The first runner home was a newcomer to the league and he recorded one of the fastest times this year with a very impressive 13.23, well done Mark. In second place last week was Carolyn Ahern with 21.11, Paula Collins was third with 22.12 and a second behind her in fourth place was Carol Kenny and in 5th place and well under 17 minutes was Tom Hogan with 16.57. There’s no time for anyone to rest on their laurels as even though Tony Ferncombe is still at the lead it’s still there for the taking. Last week Tony had a lead of 58 points over Martina Power but that is now down to 33 points and just another 14 points behind in 3rd place is Paul McGrath so it’s a case of best foot forward for everyone over the next 3 rounds, best of luck to you all.
DIVISION 1
Tony Ferncombe 365
Martina Power 398
Paul McGrath 412
Thomas Hallahan 470
John Power 486
Sinead Moore 499
Lawrence Hanrahan 514
Joe Nunan 516
Ann O’ Donnell 531
Brett Lynam 555
The other division leaders are Patricia Daly, Michael Moynihan, Mag Budds and Kevin Harty.
STARTING TIMES FOR TONIGHT
It’s 20 seconds between the runners in the short route and 30 seconds in the long route tonight.
THANKS
Once again we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the crew that are involved in the running of the league, your support and contribution is so much appreciated. Thanks also to Pearse and Marion Moloney of the All-Rounder who have sponsored the league once again this year and have always been great supporters of the league, thanks so much.
MICHAEL ROCHE CARPETS SPRING SERIES IN FULL SWING
The Michael Roche Carpets Spring Series got underway with the Colligan Cup last Sunday week and the second race was the John Treacy Dungarvan 10. The series has a different format this year as you no longer have to pay to join the series, anyone who runs any 3 of the 4 race series will automatically be entered for the series. The remaining 2 races are the Kilmac 5 (Feb 19th) and the Dungarvan Business Centre 10K (Feb 26th)
BAUSCH AND LOMB KILMACTHOMAS 5
The next big club event will be on Sunday February 19th at 11 a.m. with the annual Bausch and Lomb sponsored Kilmacthomas 5 mile road race. This is the third race of the Michael Roche Carpets spring series. The organising committee headed up by Michael and Nicola Dee in Kilmacthomas have plans well advanced for the race. Entries will be taken at the community hall Kilmacthomas at the top of the town with the entry fee being €8. Shower facilities will also be available in this hall after the event for both men and women. With the help of the very generous sponsorship very kindly given by Bausch and Lomb a very attractive prize fund will be on offer with a total of over €1.000 for the top competitors and plenty of spots for down the field finishers also. Presentation of prizes will take place at Kirwan’s Bar on the Main St. where sandwiches and refreshments will be available to all.
RUNNING QUOTE
I constantly remind myself that resting takes confidence. Anyone can train like a mad man but to embrace rest and to allow all the hard training to come out takes mental strength.
DAVID MCCARTHY IN SPARKLING FORM IN THE USA
David McCarthy gave the performance of his career to date when he won a stunning mile race at the Terrier Invitational last Saturday night setting a huge Personal Best of 3:55.75 minutes. David who spent Christmas at home was training superbly well here and the writing was on the wall that a display from him like this last Saturday was waiting for the right race with a good lead pacer. David looks set now for a strong indoor season in the US Collegiate NCAA championships. John Coghlan was 3rd in the same race and also dipped under the 4 minute barrier with 3:59.32 minutes and in doing do his father Eamon and himself have become the first Irish father and son duo to break the magical 4 minute barrier. David now moves well up the Irish indoor milers all-time list where he now fills 5th spot. The previous week over 3,000 metres at the Sheatock Invitational in Boston David won with a time of 7:56.76 which saw him finish over eleven seconds clear of his nearest rival. The Providence College athlete powered his way to a meet record here running 7:56.76 to break the 1994 record held by Alan Culpepper of the University of Colorado of 8:01.2.Well done David we now look forward to some big performances from you this year.
