GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIES
DOOCEY’S ORIEL BAR BALLYMACARBRY 5 MILE ROAD RACE
The penultimate race of the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series, the Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race, took place last Friday evening in the picturesque Nire Valley. The race itself was a huge success thanks to all the gang in the village that left no stone unturned in the preparations in the lead up to the event, our sincere gratitude to Pat Walsh and his team for all their support and effort. Anyone who has run this race in the last few years will vividly recall the wind and rain that has been a feature of this race but fortunately for the athletes last Friday the running conditions could only be described as absolutely ideal, the sun had gone in and with only the slightest of breezes, it meant that the huge turn out of 163 runners were in for great times. Our thanks once again to all the crew who had the course in tip top shape for the runners and the course was well marked out. It was great to see the 800 metres and the 400 metres markings on the final mile as it certainly kept the athletes going over the final hurdles. Thanks to all at the community centre for permitting the use of the fabulous facilities there, entries were taken at the hall and changing and showers were also available which was really appreciated by one and all, a big thank you to Danny O’ Rourke for his assistance with this. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank John Condon for permitting the course to go through his land; his gesture was very much appreciated. The very first Ballymacarbry race took place in 1995 and it’s fair to say that the race has flourished since then and 16 years later it is still attracting record numbers and it’s onwards and upwards for this race. The major attraction is the variety it offers, it really has a bit of everything for the runners, a good start to allow you to settle into a rhythm and then onto the wood section, the uphill and the downhill and a nice flat last mile to the finish so it’s no wonder athletes travel from near and far to take part. Practically everybody found the hill no bother at all this year, the underfoot conditions were great in the wood and it sure was a welcome change to running in the wet as we have done over the past. No wonder then that the ladies record was broken and the men also provided a great race as well. We are most fortunate also each year to have the support and assistance of Tony Doocey of Doocey’s Bar in Ballymacarbry who year after year sponsors the race and is a most generous sponsor. Tony provided invaluable help on the night and presented the prizes to all the runners, many thanks. Thanks to all those that provided the sandwiches and to Tony and family for all their help, it was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Dick Guiry who accepted a the cheque on behalf of the community centre. Finally, thanks to our own crew for another job well done and thanks to all who helped steward the course and provide support for the runners.
PHILIP RECORDS HIS SECOND VICTORY IN SUMMER SERIES
Philip Harty of West Waterford recorded a most impressive victory in the Ballymacarbry 5 mile when he finished in a very fast time of 25.53. The absence of Sandis and Raivis at the race propelled Philip in to the position of pre-race favourite and he duly delivered by running a classic race and no doubt his recent hill running experience in Bulgaria as part of the Irish team certainly helped him on his way. As soon as the starting gun sounded there was an immediate break away group of 5 athletes with Rory Moloney leading out the group which consisted of Philip, Brian Murphy, Danny Smith, Ted and Matt Flennelly and Kevin kenneally. With these athletes together out the Nire Road they pushed each other to record a very fast 4.48 for the first mile which was well inside the 5 minutes per mile needed to break the record of 25.00 which incidentally was set by Philip’s brother William way back in 1995. It’s always easy to run a fast first mile; it’s maintaining the pace that’s a lot more difficult. The second mile as we all discovered has a slight pull upwards which can play havoc for split times and so the second mile was clocked at 5.19, still only 7 seconds outside the pace required for the record. And as we all know the race really begins up the hill and at this stage Philip was by far the strongest and most comfortable of the group as they battled through the wood and Philip pulled away ever so confidently with each step as did Brian Murphy who at this stage looked certain to take second and a battle was going on between Rory Moloney and Danny Smith of Ballynonty further behind. The third mile for Philip was 5.25, the fast first mile showing in the legs but nevertheless he soldiered on. The downhill after the wood was a welcome relief and provided an opportunity to claw back some of the time lost on the uphill and for the fourth mile Philip recorded 4.54 and he was in no danger of being caught and so he was able to relax and concentrate on his stride and crossed the line a most worthy winner and for the 5 miles he clocked 25.53 which was super running. Philip won the recent Dromana 5 mile race and now he has a second victory in the series to his credit and it seems as if he is improving with every race and was delighted to win on the night so well done to you Philip. Great credit must go to Brian Murphy who never once gave up in pursuit of Philip and he truly deserved second place and it’s this determination that sees him well places on the series tables. Brian was well clear of Rory Moloney who finished third in 27.25. Danny Smith of Ballynonty who is a great supporter of all our races was 4th in 27.47 and Ted Flannelly of Slaney Olympic was only a few seconds behind Danny and his great performance saw him finish 5th overall and first 0/40. A total of 17 runners broke 30 minutes and of those 17 athletes, 7 were from our own club and among them was young Declan Power who recorded 28.57 and finished 9th overall and he was also the first junior so well done Declan, great running. We also had two more club members in the other individual categories, Tom Moroney had a fine run to take the 0/50 prize and John Foley who has dominated the 0/60 category over the summer picked up another prize last Friday night so well done to you all. Congratulations also to David Phelan who won for himself the prize of the first local athlete home and his time of 32.25 saw him well clear.

PAULINE LAMB BREAKS ANOTHER COURSE RECORD
Pauline Lambe has once again written herself into the history books by setting yet another course record, this really proves what a talented and dedicated athlete she really is. To her credit, she now has set 3 course records in the 2010 summer series and looks well on target to break the course record in Ardmore which is the final race of the series. The previous record was held by Sinead Crotty who in 2007 clocked 29.50 but last Friday night Pauline ran the same course in 29.48 so broke the record by 2 seconds. She went into the lead from the start of the race and was in no danger of being caught whatsoever and so all she had to do was concentrate on her pace and the two hills in the wood. She tired somewhat over the last mile but a look at her watch at the 800 metre mark meant that it was within her capabilities and a final surge over the final half mile saw her take as easy victory just as she did last year. The real battle of the race was going on only shortly behind Pauline. Angela McCann and Martina O’ Dywer, two athletes of immense talent were involved in a major battle right to the line. Martina was ahead of Angela heading out the Nire Road but after a mile the roles were reversed with Angela taking the lead. Martina seemed happy to let Angela set the pace and sat in behind Angela and it was on the uphill section through the wood that Martina chose her moment and regained the lead. It wasn’t to last however as Angela closed the gap again and coming off the downhill for the home straight Angela once again overtook Martina who was a metre or two behind. It was a battle of wills over the final hurdle and with 20 metres to go it was literally neck and neck between the two athletes as Martina made a last effort but Angela responded immediately and the sprint finish between the two saw Angela just hit the line ahead of Martina, both gave it their all and provided a spectacular race for the spectators and both were thrilled to have pushed each other to their limit so credit where credit is due. This was Martina’s first year running in Ballymac, Angela recorded 32.06 last year and her time this year of 30.29 shows exactly what you can do when pushed all the way, well done girls. We had three members in the individual categories with Corinna Walsh winning the 0/35, Ann Dunford the 0/40 and Bernie Prendergast the 0/50 so well done to all, great running.

AMBER PETROLEUM FIT4LIFE LEAGUE
FUN IN THE SUN
On another excellent evening for running there was a fine turn out once again at the Friary grounds for the 5th of 8 nights in the Amber Garage sponsored predict your time league. Five nights may be over but that certainly does not mean that it’s too late to join in the fun as over the course of the next 3 weeks we will have a further 9 prize winners. With prizes awarded to the top 3 each night and as we always use the policy of one prize per athlete this means at the end of 8 weeks we will be presenting prizes to 24 different runners. So why not come along on Tuesday 3rd, 10th and 17th August to see if you can accurately predict how long it will take you to run 1, 2, 3 or 4 laps of the Friary. You choose the amount of laps you wish to run and then choose a time you think it will take you and as the clock counts to zero you begin your run at your predicted time. If you cross the line as the clock counts down to zero you could be the winner. Don’t worry, we will be there to give advice and get you started and we will provide some refreshments at the finish line too.
DECLAN DOES THE BUSINESS
For the past 2 weeks the field has been very evenly divided into half too fast and half on the right side of the clock. This week with the fine evening we had 44 runners already into the finishing tunnel before the clock struck zero but pride of place this week goes to the 45th runner, Declan Hayes who was clicked by our time keeper Liam and declared the winner. Declan led home a very large group of 21 runners who all crossed the line in just 13 seconds. This once again proved a tough job for Shirley, Liam and Tony on the finish line but as usual they were more than up to the task. Right behind Declan and just 2 seconds outside her predicted time was Colleen Hayes who will be delighted with her timing here. Another runner who was delighted with their run was Michael Foley who was just 3 seconds slower than his chosen time and took third prize on the night. Liam Sandford (0.04) who took a win in week 3 of the league showed his expertise here as he finished so close again in 4th place taking a valuable 27 points for the Champions League Table. Yevgeniy Chizhikov too was very close at just 5 seconds out while Paddy Power who was 4th last week was in 6th place this week and only 6 seconds off the mark. Well done to everyone who finished on the right side of the clock and with 30 runners in this position they all took points this week.
44 TOO FAST
No one wants to be too fast in this league but that’s exactly what happened to Vincent Tutty this week as he finished a mere 3 seconds faster than his predicted time but he will have the consolation of taking 20 valuable points for the Champions League Table. Tom Moroney is really hitting some form again and had an excellent run this week and was just 4 seconds too fast while Aoife Wall is proving to be somewhat of an expert in this league and went very close once again at just 5 seconds too fast. Tomás Coleman picked up the pace in the last lap and this proved to be a wrong move as he crossed the line 10 seconds before the clock reached zero. Tommy Keniry was also just 10 seconds too fast so next week all these runners will be aiming to get the timing right and finish on the right side of the clock.
SPONSORS AND THANK YOUS
As always we would like to thank all the runners who take part each week and of course our league sponsors Pat and Marion Keane of the Amber Garage on the Youghal Road for their support of this league. Thanks also to our hard working team of officials at the finish line who do such a great job and of course to St Augustine’s College for allowing us to use their facilities.
AMBER GARAGE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TABLE
It’s so close at the top now and after 5 weeks we have joint leaders in Onra Power and Anna Ballott who both have 106 points. This is an average scoring of 21 points per week and if they maintain this average they will smash the winning total of 148 points set by Yevgeniy Chizhikov in 2008. The girls have an 11 point lead over their nearest rival Paddy Power but with so many points on offer each week this could all change again next week so the next 3 nights of the league should be very interesting indeed. The top 10 are as follows:
NAME POINTS
1. Onra Power 106
2. Anna Ballott 106
3. Paddy Power 95
4. Liam Sandford 91
5. Tom Leahy 84
6. Caroline Lenihan 78
7. Adrian Fitzgerald 76
8. Catriona Kiely 76
9. Tomás Coleman 74
10. Michael Deegan 69
WEST WATERFORD ATHLETES PERFORM SUPERBLY AT MUNSTER TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Once again the club’s master athletes were out in force at the Munster Track and Field Championships which were held in Cork CIT last Sunday. While the rest of us were recovering after Ballymac, the track and field athletes had an early start last Sunday morning in the hope of winning the best track and field club for the fifth year in a row. The final tally of results is yet to be confirmed given the large number of clubs in attendance but given the fantastic display by all the athletes we are most definitely in with a chance. The first track event of the day was the 4 x 100 metres relay and the team of Corinna Walsh, Bridget Coffey, Ann Dunford and Triona Wall won silver medals which set the team off to a great start. This was followed with a gold medal for the second relay team which consisted of Bernie Prendergast, Josie Ui Chuirrin, Jacinta Shiel and Terry Gough. Meanwhile in the field events Michael Tutty was second in the javelin event with a throw of 32.20 and Frank O’ Brien was first in the discus. After winning gold in the relay Jacinta added three more gold medals to her credit when she won gold in the hammer, the shot and the javelin. |Terry Gough who is also an expert at the field events picked up gold medals in the hammer and the javelin as well. Bernie Prendergast and Jacinta Shiel were first and second respectively in the 100 metres and Corrina Walsh battled bravely to be joint first in the 100 metres in her race. Terry Gough was also involved in a dead heat in her 100 metres race but she alone picked up the gold for the 200 metres which brought her tally to 5 gold medals for the day. Joe Gough won gold in the 1500 metres with a season’s best and John Foley picked up bronze in the same race in his category. In the 800 metres event victory went to Corinna Walsh and Josie Ui Chuirrin in their categories and Ann Dunford was third in the same event. In the men’s 800 metres Johnny O’ Connor was second and Yev was third and Harry O’ Brien who is one of the finest 800 metres runners around these parts was awarded the gold for his efforts. In the 400 metres event Johnny was third and Corinna won her race in style. In the 3,000 metres event we had two athletes competing with Corinna Walsh adding yet another gold medal to her collection and Triona Wall collected the bronze medal. In the men’s 3,000 metres John Foley improved on his bronze in the 1,500 metres to take silver. It was a huge effort on the part of all the athletes and they are to be congratulated for their fine performances and commitment to the club. Thanks to one and all for travelling and competing and sincere thanks to Ann Dunford who looked after the entries and the team on the day, many thanks.
WEST WATERFORD AC EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS DAILY DIARY
DAY ONE BARCELONA 2010
Good morning from day one of the 20th European track and field championships in Barcelona. It’s a beautiful morning for the start of the championships where Ireland has a 32 strong field of competitors who will perform in the Irish singlet over the next 5 days. We’re here at the 20k walk where Ireland has two participants Rob Heffernan and Jamie Costin. The warm early morning sun is thankfully hidden in the tree lined 1k circuit which the walkers will be glad of. Both raced well with Rob Heffernan unfortunate not to be among the medals finishing in 4th place with a superb time of 1.21.00 always in contention throughout but just fading off the pace over the final few kilometrtes, a credible performance from the Togher athlete but no medal for what was a superb performance, a great opener to the championships for the Irish. Will he try the 50k in three days time? West Waterford’s Jamie Costin finished 20th in 1.26.05, a good walk in a major championship for Jamie who dropped down in distance this year from his usual 50k discipline. Mean while back at the stadium we had eleven athletes in action in their various heats. The Woman’s 400 metres hurdles had three, Justine Kinney, Michelle Carey and Brona Furlong, none qualified, Carey finishing 5th in 57.58 a seasons best. Justine Kinney finished 7th with a faster time of 57.39 with Brona Furlong also 7th in heat 3. In the men’s 400 heats we had David Gillick, Gordon Kennedy and Brian Cregan. David Gillick looked impressive when winning his heat in a time of 45.84 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals. Gordon Kennedy the Tullamore Harriers man is also through to the semis after he qualified after running a fast 46.63 in heat one finishing 6th. Brian Gregan failed to qualify after finishing fifth in heat four with a time of 46.90. Irish long jump champion and record holder Kelly Proper was very disappointed with her performance as she did not register a jump in the Long Jump. That’s the morning session done and dusted on a mixed morning for the Irish with the highlight being Rob Heffernan’s superb 4th placing in the 20k walk a super performance and Gillick looking in great form as he makes the semi easily. Our only competitor in the evening session was in heat 3 of the Ladies 800 metrse where Rose-Ann Galligan finished a credible 7th with a new personal best of 2.01.76
Day 2
We’re back again where we started yesterday morning at the Parc De La Ciutadella. This morning’s it’s the turn of the Ladies 20k Walk and one of our medal hopes World silver medallist from Berlin last year Olive Loughnane competes and another Irish interest is West Waterford’s Zuzana Malikova of Slovakia who is girl friend to Jamie Costin. 23 face the starter’s pistol. Just at the 5k mark when Olive was looking fine nestled in a group who were in behind two Russian leaders Olive failed to pass the finish line on the 6th lap, stomach problems have made it impossible for her to continue. Ireland’s world silver medallist is out. Likewise a similar fate awaited Zuzana who is also gone from the field just 2k’s later with a similar problem. Back at the Stadium Tori Pena in the Pole Vault finished 12th with a vault of 4.15 metres setting a new National record but still not good enough to progress in the competition. Ailis McSweeney finished fourth in her heat of the women’s 100m to qualify for the semi finals. She ran 11.52 just outside her Irish record of 11.30 set two weeks ago but it was her second fastest time ever. Fionnuala Britton and Stephanie Reilly were in action in the Women’s 3.000 metres steeplechase and Fionnuala has reached the final with a 6th place finish in 9.44.84 while Stephanie finished 10th in 10.10.94 David Mc Carthy in the Men’s 800 Metres had not once but twice to deal with the incursion of Nederland’s Robert Lathouwers into his lane before the Dutch man was disqualified leaving David to qualify in 5th spot with a time of 1.49.53. In the evening session our first competitor is Joanne Cuddihy in the Woman’s 400 metres heat 3. Joanne finished 4th in a time of 52.58 which was just outside qualification for the semis. David Gillick and Gordon Kennedy were in heats 2 and 3 respectively in the semi finals of the 400 metres with Gillick winning his heat impressively in 44.79 and securing a place in Friday’s final. It was also a new season’s best, Kennedy finished 8th in 46.72 to bow out of the championships. Jason Smyth put in a terrific performance to take 4th place in a time of 10.46 in heat one of the 100 meters semis, the same finishing position as his heat yesterday. However this time it wasn’t enough to see him through to the final. Thomas Chamney finished 9th in heat 2 of the Men’s 1.500 Metres clocking 3.43.60 while Rory Chesser finished 10th in heat one with a time of 3.44.01 not enough to progress here for either.Another busy night for the Irish at the Europeans in the Olympic stadium here in Barcelona with Gillick the performance of the day, roll on Fridays final.
DAY 3
Just one Irish competitor in this morning’s session and that’s Paul Hession in heat 4 of the 400 metres. Paul finished 2nd in a time of 20.69, the 5th fastest of the four heats to easily qualify for the semi finals later this evening. The Men’s 5.000 metres heats get under way with Irish interest in both heats. Alistair Cragg goes in heat 1 and Mark Christie will be in heat 2. Cragg makes the final finishing 6th in a time of 13.37.66. . Mark Christie finishes a disappointing 11th in heat 2 with a time of 14.12.68 to bow out of the competition. Ailis Mcsweeney was next on the track in what is a very busy night for the Irish team; Ailis has just missed out on a place in the Women’s 100m final by .01 of a second finishing 4th . The Irish record holder recorded a time of 11.32.Great effort. Paul Hession is back out on the track for his 200 metres semi final and he is drawn in lane 5, not his favourite lane. Hession has just qualified for the final finishing 4th in his heat and the 7th best time of the semis 20.67. Next it’s the semi finals of the Men’s 800 metres and we have David McCarthy drawn in lane 8 in the 2nd semi. David has finished 6th in 1.49.33 and was not to progress.
DAY 4
Back to our walkers this morning and an early start as the race gets under way at 7.30 am.. Colin Griffin and yes Rob Heffernan has decided to give it a crack, this would only be his 2nd attempt ever at a 50k distance. Rob Heffernan took the first half of the gruelling event at a conservative pace and walked his way through the field when in 20th position at one stage he claimed 4th spot by race end repeating his finishing position from the 20km Walk. Heffernan was clocked at 3.45.30 setting a new National record by over 4 minutes. For many it was one of the best performances ever witnessed by an Irish athlete. As above another great story from our walkers came in the same event when Colin Griffin produced his best ever major championship performance when he finished 11th. Griffin clocked a time of 3:57.58. Mean while back at the stadium Deirdre Ryan was competing in the Ladies High Jump in group 2. Deirdre finished 9th. Deirdre jumped a season’s best height of 1.90m but missed out on qualification for the next round. Derval O’Rourke looks in terrific form when competing in Heat 3 of the 100 metres hurdles which she won with a time of 12.88 to easily make the semi final on Saturday evening. Derval looks very focused. In the Ladies 200 metres Niamh Whelan is in heat 1. Niamh just 20 years old and competing in her first major senior championships acquitted herself well finishing 4th in round 1 with a time of 23.78. Later in the evening in the semi finals the Ferrybank lady finished 6th in 23.31.Watch out for this name again. Fionnuala Britton is in the final of the Women’s 3.000 metres steeplechase. Britton finished 11th in 9.44.25. David Gillick is Ireland’s final competitor tonight at the Olympic stadium and competes in the final of the Men’s 400 metres. Gillick is drawn in lane 4, and the field is together with 100 to go. In the gallop to the line he finishes in an agonising 5th 45.28, just 0.5 off the bronze medal.
DAY 5
Its day 5 here in Barcelona and it’s another very warm day. Our ladies team of Amy Foster, Claire Brady, Niamh Whelan and Ailis Mc Sweeney are in heat 1 of the 4x100.The four girls put in a great performance and finish 4th in a time of 43.93 setting a new national record, however they are one place out of the automatic qualification spot so don’t progress in the competition. There was another National Irish record to fall in the morning session when the women’s 4×400m team of Marian Andrews, Joanne Cuddihy, Brona Furlong and Michelle Carey finished in 5th position in heat 2 in a time of 3:30.11.The girls gave it their all but again just missed out on a qualifying spot in the final. The Men’s 4×400m relay team of Gordon Kennedy, Brian Murphy, Brian Gregan and Steven Colvert performed well in heat one finishing 6th in a time of 3.07.21 but were outside the three automatic qualification places. In the evening session Derval O’Rourke was in heat 1 of the semi finals and she looked smooth finishing 3 rd in 12.75 which was a season’s best for the Leevale athlete. She looks in great form now going into the final later in the evening Derval O'Rourke is drawn in lane 7 for the final and all Irish hopes are on the Leevale athlete. Derval had the run of her life finishing 2nd and winning a silver medal with a new National Record clocked at 12.65 taking .02 of her previous best and national record. This silver now adds to the silver medal Derval won at the last European championships in Gothenburg. Ireland’s final interest at the championships is Alistair Cragg in the final tonight of the 5.000m. After a very slow early pace Cragg took it up at the 2.000 metres mark but by 3.000 metres he had drifted back through the field again and at 3.300 metres dropped out of the race with stomach upset to end his participation in the race and Ireland’s participation at the championships. So the night and the performance at the championships belong to Leevale’s Derval O’Rourke with her silver medal winning performance in the 100 meters hurdles and second the heroic performances form Rob Heffernan with his two 4th placings in the 20k and 50k walks kept Irish eyes smiling for the huge Irish attendance in Barcelona. The next championships will be held in two years time in Helsinki.

RUNNING QUOTE
The miracle isn’t that I finished, The Miracle is that I had the courage to start.
