Notes July 04-10
59th CORK INTERNATIONAL CITY SPORTS.
RECORDS THE ORDER OF THE DAY FOR WEST WATERFORD RACE WALKERS COSTIN AND VEALE.
West Waterford Athletic club provided two new national records at last Saturdays Cork City International Sports at C.I.T when in the 3,000m walk there was two outstanding performances from Jamie Costin and Kate Veale. Both over distances of 3.000 posted superb times in the event which for many was the highlight of the day’s competition. Visiting Australian walker Luke Adams won the event in 10:59.04 which is the fastest time in the World this year for the distance, Jamie who is competing in the upcoming Barcelona European championships over 20k has been in sparkling form this past couple of week’s competing in Paris France the previous week he clocked an impressive 19.24.51 when finishing 5th in a top class field over 5.000 meters. In Cork on Saturday Jamie’s second place finish was significant because his time of 11:12.02 broke Robert Heffernan’s Senior Men’s Irish record (11:14.09) set at the same meet last year. Jamie’s performance in Cork argues well for the Ring Man coming into the Europeans where he will race the 20k and not his past championship distance of 50k one’s things for sure he is in the shape of his life presently after posting such a world class time indeed it was a display of race walking of the very highest caliber. Speaking of high caliber race walking then shortly after Jamie crossed the finish line so did young Kate Veale who incidentally is coached by Jamie Costin. The Ladies race was World silver medalist Olive Loughnane win the women’s section in 12:51.06, just ahead of Kate Veale whose time of 12:58.60 smashed the record set by sister of Olive’s-Ann Loughnane’s in 2004 the old standard was 13:45.89 .Kate is one of two Irish athlete’s who have qualified for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this August and is training hard for the event under the watchful eye of Jamie Costin and Br Patrick Lennon St Augustine’s College where Kate is at school. The men’s 1,500m in Cork saw the field bunched together for much of the distance before an all out sprint in the home straight saw Shaun Moralee (GBR) just edge home in one of the closest finishes of the day – six runners stretched across the track with just hundredths separating them. David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) was best of the Irish in 6th in 3:42.24.David was just over a second outside the qualifying time for the Europeans but he will have another opportunity to attain this on Sunday next at the National championships in Santry. Kate, Jamie and David will be facing the starter’s pistol in Santry this week end along with a good number of West Waterford club mates when the Woodies DIY All Ireland Seniors Track and Field will be held in Santry Stadium .Dublin. We wish all participants the best of luck.
MINNIES FIT4LIFE RUNNING LEAGUE
FINAL ROUND UP AND LEAGUE WINNERS
2009 was a record breaking year for the Minnies Fit4Life Running League and in 2010 records were once again broken as this league, in it’s seventh year is now confirmed as second only to the Winter League in terms of popularity and participation. Perhaps it is the timing of the league coming as it does just as the summer commences. Thoughts turn to fitness and well being as the sun comes out and we are anxious to get out in the fresh air and take some exercise. Once again this year we had many newcomers who came back week after week and their enthusiasm was brilliant to see and made the league all the more enjoyable. Sometimes we tend to forget our regular runners and take for granted that they will support our leagues but we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part, we hope you enjoyed the 8 weeks and feel better and healthier as a result.
It’s worth remembering that this league and others like it is where many of our marathon runners started their running and that many of them started with 1 lap and moved up to 2, 3 or 4 laps when they were ready. That’s also what many of the participants in this league did and it was brilliant to see many of these runners take part in some of the recent 5 mile races in the Summer Series. This year all previous records for the league were broken on the 3rd night when we had 158 participants which was the most participants ever in the Friary for a running league. This year the 2 lap distance was the most popular and over the course of the league 77 runners participated in total in the 2 laps. The 4 lap distance was next most popular with 73 runners taking part. In the 1 lap 68 different people took part while finally in the 3 lap 46 participated giving a total of 264 runners. Well done to all and here is a breakdown of the winners.
RONAN CROWNED 1 LAP CHAMPION
In 2009 Paschal Proctor fought a determined campaign to become the 1 Lap Champion, well, this year it was the turn of his son Ronan to try his hand at the Friary Leagues and he was successful on his very first outing. Ronan finished first on 7 out of the 8 nights and finishing with a total of 6 points from his best six nights was not going to be denied. In second place here was Tom Murphy who also ran 7 out of the 8 nights and finished with a points total of 65. Kevin Tutty also finished on 65 points but Tom’s higher finishing position of fifth in week 5 saw him declared second place winner. For the record Ronan recorded the fastest time in the 1 lap league of 7.03 which he ran in week 2 and again in week 4.
Division 2
Colleen Hayes daughter of Helene and Anselim has been listening to talk of running in her house for years and of course has assisted with registration at the Winter League and races over the years but decided to give it a go herself this year. Well she can be delighted with her efforts as she took the second division title with 75 points from her best 6 nights 15 ahead of her nearest rival here, Linda Kiely on 90.
Division 3
Lucinda Shrubb ran all 8 nights of this league and with a points total of 117 she took control of the third division title from second place finisher Louise Kenneally on 124 points. Louise ran 7 out of the 8 nights and had her fastest time on the last week when she broke 13 minutes for the first time in the league recording 12.45. Lucinda also recorded her best time on the final night when she ran the 12 miles in 12.37.
DAVID DELIVERS 2 LAP TITLE FOR EARLEY FAMILY
For years David Earley has been representing West Waterford A.C. in competition all over Munster and Ireland and since reaching the age of 16 he is now competing in the leagues run by the senior club. In this league David ran 6 out of the 8 nights and finished first on 3 occasions and with a total of 10 points with his fastest time of 14.45 coming on the final night of the league. Abbeyside native Trevor Walsh decided to use the Minnies league for speed work for the summer races and will be delighted to finish second here with 16 points just 3 ahead of 3rd place finisher James Casey on 19. Trevor’s fastest time of 16.17 came in week 4 while James recorded his best finish of 16.19 was in week 5.
Division 2
Division 2 turned into a battle of the Ring ladies Sinead de Faoite and Eilis Harty. From week 3 Eilis broke the 20 minute barrier and from here on in she never looked back with her fastest time of 19.42 coming in week 4 while Sinead too worked really hard to break that 20 minute mark and this she did on the final night running 19.40. It was Eilis though who took the honours with a points total of 57 from her best 6 nights while Sinead was just 7 behind on 64 finishing ahead of another Ring native Kelly Cantwell on 75.
Division 3
Carol Whelan came to the fore in division 3 as she took control of the division with 105 points from her 6 nights. Carol improved her time each night finishing on the final night by breaking the 21 minute barrier in a time of 20.53. Carol’s nearest rival here was Geraldine Barry who ran 6 nights and who also had her best run of 21.00 on the final night finishing with a points total of 112. In the end Geraldine was just 1 point ahead of third place finisher here, Jacinta Sheil on 113.
Division 4
Colligan won out in Division 4 when Sarah Power who led going into the final night held out with consistency being the key here as Sarah ran the 2.4 miles in 23 minutes each night with her fastest run of 23.06 on the second last week of the league. Angela Power was the nearest rival here to Sarah and Angela was just 5 points adrift and another 5 ahead of 3rd place finisher Ann Lyons on 162.
3 LAP TITLE GOES TO KILMAC
Since Gary Mc Cormack’s return from injury he is running absolutely everything and here he showed consistency as he took part in 7 out of 8 nights of this league and finished first on 4 occasions with his fastest time on the last night when he ran 22.27. With a points total of 8 Gary was 9 points ahead of John Downey who also has a very good league as he finished second on 2 occasions and had his best run on the second last night recording 24.55.
Division 2
Athlete of the Month for May Onra Power was in competition with Emma Kirwan here as they fought for control of division 2. After week 7 Emma was in 5th position in division 1 but after the final calculations Declan Hayes moved from division 2 to division 1 while Emma moved down to top divison 2 with 47 points and she was delighted to take victory here with her best time in week 5 when she ran 30.03. Onra will also be delighted with her progress in the league as she showed great consistency taking a full minute from her fastest time on the final night when she broke 30 minutes running 29.33.
Division 3
Rita Cronolly had a great Colligan Hill League and she has kept up her good form to lead division 3 going into the final night and she was not to be denied as with a points total of 77 she finished 23 points ahead of Claire Broderick who finished with 100 points. Rita saved the best for last as she had a p.b. by some 30 seconds as she ran 32.28 while Claire had her best run of 33.42 in week 5.
4 LAP TITLE GOES DOWN TO KILKENNY
Brian Murphy is certainly the story of 2010 to date. He is a member of Carrick on Suir athletic club but hails from across the border near Piltown in Co. Kilkenny and since he has taken up running he has been taking prizes in every race he enters. Here Brian recorded some fantastic times and finished first on 5 out of the 7 occasions that he ran with his fastest time recorded in week 3 when he ran a marvellous 25.35 and so finished with 7 points. Kevin Kenneally finished second to Sean Stilwell in this league last year and he was back again in 2010 to once again claim second place. Kevin ran every night and finishing with a points total of 11 and had his best times in week 3 and 4 when he ran the exact same time of 26.35.
Division 2
When Brian decided to come to the Friary to run the league he brought his brother Martin with him and his progress in the league was truly remarkable. Martin started on his first night with a time of 31.18 and by the final night he had taken this down to 28.28 finishing just behind Kevin and Brian on the final night. Martin’s points total was 44 and this was exactly the same as Kilrossanty man Pat Riordan but the 3rd place finish by Martin on the final night clinched the title as Pat’s highest finish place was 6th.
Division 3
Adrian Fitzgerald is another runner who is running in every competition lately and his dedication was rewarded with a win here in division 3 as he won with a points total of 72 from Earl Navin who had 93 points from his best 6 nights. Adrian had his fastest time of 31.36 in week 3 while Earl recorded his best time of 32.58 in week 5.
Division 4
One lady who is having a fantastic summer of racing came to the fore in division 4 as Norma Wall was victorious here with 108 points. Norma used the league to do some interval training and has her best time in 32.53 in week 5 taking victory here from Brickey man Colin Lyons who finished with 112 points and Colin also saved the best for last as he had his fastest time of 33.11 on the final night.
Division 5
Coolnasmear native Tom Moroney came up trumps in division 5 where 135 points saw him victorious here from Ann Dunford on 144 points. Tom was ill on the final night but that did not deter him and his best time came in week 4 when he ran the 4.8 miles in exactly 34 minutes. Ann ran her fastest time of 34.56 in week 3.
Division 6
First place in division 6 went all the way to Ballymacarbry to Liam Byrne as he claimed top spot here with 166 points from Vincent (Bo-Bo) Tutty who despite having 3 young supporters each night just failed to take top spot finishing 3 points behind on 169. Liam actually had his fastest time on the very first night when he ran 34.52and Bo-Bo had his p.b. for this league in week 2 when he ran 35.12.
Division 7
The second lady to take a division win here was Angeline Drennan and she did so on 190 points from second place finisher Thomas Murphy who finished on 212 points from his best 6 nights. Angeline had a great league and had her best run on the final night running the 4 laps in 35.42. Thomas started off the league in week 1 running 39.13and by the final night he took his time down to 37.32 which was also great progress by Thomas.
Division 8
John Foley has taken some category prizes lately in the recent summer races and once again he came to the fore here as he claimed victory in the Minnies League winning division 8 on 240 points from Cappoquin man Aidan Walsh. Aidan also finished on the same points total but victory went to John who had a lower finishing position of 29 on the final night while Aidan’s lowest finish was 36. By finishing in 29th place on the final night in 37.23 John not only secured his win but also had a p.b. by 50 seconds. Aidan too had a great league and his best time came on the second last night when he clocked 38.52.
Division 9
Alison O Brien and Kate Organ had a fantastic league and as a result they have taken part in some of the summer series races with great times recorded. On the first night of this league they ran 48.10 and week after week they improved down to 43.34 on the final night. Alison took victory by 6 points finishing on 266 points from Kate on 272 but in truth they can both be very proud of their achievements here.
PRIZEGIVING
The prize giving took place in Minnies Bar Abbeyside on Thursday 17th June and once again we had a great turn out of prize-winners which made the evening a great success. Tony Ryan our chairman began by welcoming everyone to the proceedings and went on to thank all the runners who took part in the league and congratulated them on their efforts and commitments. The prizes were then presented to the top 2 in division 1 of each distance and to the top finisher in each subsequent division. It was great to see so many prizewinners present on the night so thanks to everyone for their attendance.
SPONSORS
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the O Brien family for their continued support and commitment to athletics in West Waterford and most especially Paddy who presented the prizes on the night. During the league Charmaine was on hand with oranges and water for the runners, which was much appreciated. The food provided by the staff of Minnies was once again of the highest order and was really appreciated by everyone on the night so thanks once again to Paddy and all his staff.
THANK YOUS
The final thanks of course go to our most generous hosts at the St Augustines grounds for allowing us to hold our events on their premises during the year. We are indebted to Brother Lennon who always makes sure that athletics is looked after at the venue. Thanks also to our league organisers: Tony Ryan who ensures that everything runs smoothly, Shirley Flynn who gives up her time to take names at the finish line and also Liam Crowe who does likewise taking the times for all the runners. Thanks also to Michael Tutty who set out the course each night, Paschal who was always available to help out and James for taking the photographs for the website. To anyone else who gave a hand over the course of the league thank you once again.
So a final congratulations to everyone who took part over the 8 weeks and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
AMBER PETROLEUM FIT4LIFE LEAGUE
AMBER PETROLEUM LEAGUE GET OF TO A FLYER
The first round of the very popular Amber Petroleum Fit4Life league took place at the Friary College grounds last Tuesday evening June 29th. As with the recent Minnies League once again a great crowd was in attendance and it was wonderful to see some old and indeed some new faces. We would like to welcome all who those who took up running at our last league and who have committed to running this league also. It was great to see you all and we hope that you enjoy this league as much as the last. The aims of the Fit4Life leagues are to encourage and promote running to newcomers and regulars and to show people that you can incorporate exercise and running into your daily or weekly routine whichever you decide, it’s up to you.
Once again this league is suitable for beginners because speed means nothing here. It’s all about getting your timing right and the person running one lap has the same chance of winning as the person running 4 laps. The clock works backwards from 45 minutes to 0 so you decide what time you want to begin your run and take off at a time you feel comfortable with. The person who crosses the finishing line as the clock reaches zero is deemed to be the winner. There will also be a Champions League type table in operation where an overall Amber Petroleum League Champion will be decided with points awarded to the winners each night. 30 points will go to the first person after the clock reaches zero, with 29 going to the second etc. The person unlucky enough to finish just before the clock reaches zero will get 20 points for their efforts, 19 to the second last person etc. The winner after 8 weeks will be the person who manages to accumulate the most points. Every night will count so if you can manage to get points each night you are in with a great chance of becoming the Amber Petroleum League Champion for 2010.
With the time element involved there are no watches allowed. You are welcome to take part in any or all nights of the league. All we ask is that you come along to the club van at the Friary College grounds around 6.45 any Tuesday night for the next 6 nights and register. If you need any more information we will be happy to answer any questions at the van so just ask. It’s just €2 a night to participate and everyone is welcome. You decide your distance and take it from there. You can also run a different distance each night in this league. So if you want to start off with the 1 lap, which is 1.2 miles and then decide you are ready for the 2 laps, which is double the distance at 2.4 miles, it’s your decision. So, see you next Tuesday.
ANNA GETS HER TIMING RIGHT!
The honour of being the first weekly winner of the Amber Petroleum Fit4Life Running League for 2010 goes to Junior athlete Anna Ballott. Anna has taken part in leagues in the Friary in recent years but this year she has really started to improve and indeed has taken part in some of the recent races in the Summer Series. Anna got her timing spot on and was rewarded for her efforts as she crossed the line just as the clock reached zero and was deemed to be the first winner for 2010. Well done to Anna and congratulations once again. There are a number of athletes every year who come to the fore in this league, they are always close or just a few seconds out in their pacing and one of these runners was very close again last Tuesday evening: Onra Power has a great record in this league taking a win last year and coming very close on a few occasions also. This week she finished just behind Anna in second place and on the exact same time. Just 2 seconds behind was Caroline Lenihan while Carol Whelan and sponsor Marion Keane were also very close to victory finishing just 2 seconds slower than their predicted time. Tom Leahy, Tommy Keniry and Liam Sandford (2nd twice last year and one to watch) were all just 3 seconds outside their time while Triona and Aoife Wall were unlucky also at just 4 seconds too slow. In fact there were 15 runners in total who were less than 10 seconds outside their predicted time. This is marvellous timing by all these runners so well done to all.
TOO FAST
The unlucky person to be just 3 seconds too fast this week was Shane Power. Shane is running really well at the moment and was delighted with his run in Dromana the previous Friday. Just before Shane was another runner who took part in the Minnies league and has also competed in some of the Summer Series race: Kate Organ. On this occasion Kate was also 3 seconds to fast so she too was quite unlucky. When it comes to pacing you won’t get much better than Michael (Dixie) Deegan so it was no surprise to see Dixie was also so close to taking a win last Tuesday. For the record Dixie was just 8 seconds faster than his predicted time while Catriona Kiely and Libby Mc Ginn Murphy were also just too quick on 11 seconds before zero.
So if you got it right or almost right last week, congratulations. If you were a little too slow perhaps go off a little earlier this week and you might get it right. But it’s all a bit of fun and you are getting fitter as a result so enjoy the banter and best of luck to everyone next week and remember its never too late to join in.
SPONSORS
We would like to welcome and thank our sponsors for this league Pat, Marion and the Keane family of the Amber Garage on the Youghal Road. They came on board to sponsor this league last year and are back with us once again for 2010. Marion took part in the league last Tuesday and almost pulled off a win on the first night at just 2 seconds outside her time! As always we encourage all our members to support our sponsors where possible and take this opportunity to thank the Keane family once more.
EUROPEAN MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS.
243 athletes from 26 countries competed in last weekend’s European Hill running championships in Sapareva Banya, Bulgaria. The Irish Senior Men’s team included West Waterford’s Philip Harty who was running his first Hill championship event. Philip was the 3rd Irish finisher in 62nd place with a time of 56.04 the winner of the race came form Turkey Ahmet Arslan who clocked 46.14 over the difficult course. This was the Turk’s 4th straight time winning the championship event. Ireland finished 15th team.
GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIES
GLAXOSMITHKILNE RACE THIS FRIDAY JULY 9
The highly anticipated and eagerly awaited Glaxosmithkline race is now almost upon us with the final touches now being put into place for Friday night which sees the race start at 8 pm at the Kilrush Crystal Centre. This is race number 8 of the ten races that make up the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series and given that it’s a fast and flat course you can be sure that all runners and athletes regardless of ability and speed who are in pursuit of a PB will be in attendance as this course guarantees you a fast time. This race boasts more personal bests than any other race in the county and the evidence is in the huge crowd that attends each year with athletes travelling from all over Munster and beyond in search of the much longed for personal best times. The course records currently held for this course are held by Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford who in 2008 clocked 24.34 and given that he has accumulated 5 successive wins so far in the 2010 series it’s within his capabilities to set yet another record. Indeed he may have company on the night if he runs as Philip Harty who won the Dromana 5 in 25.30 may also set his sights on the crown as will many others so a fantastic race is in store for us all. In the ladies, it was Sinead Cummins who way back in 2004 set the ladies record when she completed the 5 mile distance in 29.20 and so far no-one has been able to match that time. At the Dromana race lately, Pauline Lambe recorded that time exactly and is more than capable of breaking that record considering that the GSK race is faster than Dromana but as she is unavailable for Friday’s race it may well be Martina O’ Dwyer of Carrick who the task will fall to or Angela McCann of Clonmel who ran one of her fastest 5 mile times ever at this course last year. Indeed, it may also very well be an unknown athlete that wins or sets the record given the popularity of the race, we will just have to wait and see. This race is always superbly organised by the hard working staff of GSK under Dermot Dwyer who always ensures that no stone is left unturned in their preparations for the race. The entry fee to the race is 8 euros and the entries will be taken in the soccer club and not the crystal centre; entries will be taken from 6.45 onwards with the race getting underway at 8 pm sharp. Changing and showers will also be available at the soccer club and it’s also where the refreshments will be provided after the race as well as the presentation of prizes. See you in Kilrush on Friday!
TWO CHARITIES TO BENEFIT FROM GSK 5.
Not one but two worthy charities are to benefit from this years GSK 5 mile road race this coming Friday evening one local and one in Lebanon. The local charity is GROW who do fantastic work locally through Sr Gertrude and her team,Grow is a Mental Health Organisation which helps people who have suffered or are suffering from mental health problems. The other charity is FAID which is a hospital for deaf children in Lebanon The Irish Defence Forces have very close links with this charity and local man Des Foley is one of the driving forces behind the organisation .Both charities in their own right do tremendous work and your support will be much appreciated Friday evening.
DOOCEY’S BAR BALLYMACARBRY 5 MILE
After the GSK race this Friday, there will be a three week break until the next race which is the Doocey’s Bar Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race. This will be the longest break between all the races in the series which will give us plenty of time to get the training in. The race itself will be held on Friday, July 30th at the earlier time of 7.30 pm. This is another very popular race in the series with the beautiful scenery of the Nire Village an added attraction. The entries will be taken in the new community centre from 6.30 pm with changing and showers also available at the centre. Refreshments and the presentation of prizes will take place in Doocey’s Bar. The entry fee is the usual 8 euros.
OUTFIELD SPORTS THREE COUNTIES CHALLENGE
The second race of this four race programme, The Champion Kiely Ballyneale 5K got underway last Friday night in the village of Ballyneale. A huge crowd of 189 took part in the race with victory going to Sergio Ciobanu of Cloinliffe Harriers in a time of 14.54 with Brian Murphy of the host club filing second place with a time of 15.32. The ladies race was won by Martina O’ Dwyer in a very fast time of 17.40 with Angela McCann of Clonmel AC finishing in second place. A large number of West Waterford athletes competed on the night with Gary McCormack leading them home in a time of 18.20. Josie Ui Chuirrin and Karen Ryan were our first lady finishers on the night, both clocking 21.13. The next race in the series is the Morris Oil Piltown 10K on Friday July 16th at 7.30 pm and the fourth and final race will be the Autopower Rathgormack 5 on Friday August 6th at 7.30 pm.

RUNNING QUOTE.
People can't understand why a man runs. They don't see any sport in it. Argue it lacks the sight and thrill of body contact. Yet, the conflict is there, more raw and challenging than any man versus man competition. For in running it is man against himself, the cruelest of opponents. The other runners are not the real enemies. His adversary lies within him, in his ability, with brain and heart to master himself and his emotions.
