26th ANNUAL OPEN CROSS COUNTRY RACE FOR THE JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP.
 
 
 
 
 
DAVID McGLYNN PROVES BEST.
 
 
 
 
Now in its 26th year the eagerly awaited open cross country race for the James Hughes perpetual cup took place last Sunday at St. Augustine's College ,as previous years the race also incorporated the country senior and junior cross country championships for men and women .For the 7th year the James Hughes perpetual cup which was presented to the race by the Power family Abbeyside in memory of their grandfather who was an international cross country runner during the time of the war was presented to the overall race winner and it was keenly fought for on the day.The event saw the under 18,Junior and senior women's race off first and they all covered 2 laps or 4.000 meters. This was followed immediately by the under 18,Junior and Senior men's race with the under 18 and Juniors running 3 laps 6000 meters and the Seniors 4 laps 8.000 meters.The overall race winner for this year was Waterford AC athlete David Mc Glynn who have a brilliant display of racing cross country on the day and was a deserving winner he was followed home by Andrew Connick Ferrybank A.C. who also finished in this position last year having won the race in 2017,third home was a Cork visitor Anthony Mannix of Leevale AC.Mark Langford Waterford AC was our winner of the over 40 category and first over 45 was Yev Chizhikov West Waterford A.C. Moreabbey Milers AC provided the over 55 winner in Willie O Donoghue and the first junior prize went to Evan Fitzgerald AC, well done to all.

 RUTH FITZGERALD MAKES AMENDS TO WIN LADIES.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Waterford AC provided the first 2 across the finish line in the ladies open event last Sunday as Ruth Fitzgerald showed she a good cross country athlete as well as running great times on the road. Ruth was runner up in the race last year so goes one better in 2019. Second spot was filled by her team mate at the city club Una O'Brien another good talent over cross country,3rd place went to the host club West Waterford AC when young Lucy Holmes proved she can mix it well with the seniors.Just like the men's event it was encouraging to see a big field in the ladies race.Well done also to all category winners on the day the over 40 category went to Waterford AC's Aisling Ferguson, Brigid Coffey West Waterford AC took the over 45 and well done to our junior ladies winner Emma Caulfield.

Firstly our sincere thanks to the Power family especially Donal Power, grandson of James Hughes who donated the magnificent cup to this race six years ago. Thanks also to Kevin,Alannah and Caoimhe Power who came along on the day to present the winner with the cup on behalf of the Power family. Once again our thanks to Br Patrick Lennon for laying out the course and to the College for the use of their facility to hold the race and to all the crew that helped with the race in anyway especially all our own club crew doing registration, timing ,results etc .Our thanks to Dave Coleman of D.C. MUNSTER NOVICE AND UNDER 23 CROSS COUNTRY ENTRIES.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The first Munster Cross Country Championship race will be the Novice and U/ 23 which are being held on Sunday 20th October in Limerick race course. The club will be sending in the entries for same shortly, any member wishing to take part is asked to contact cross country coordinator's James Veale 086 8184762 or Ann Dunford 086 0619711 A.S.A.P. No entries will be accepted on the day of race.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
26TH ANNUAL FORDE'S DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE .
 
 
 
The clubs winter league which now enters its 26th year will begin in 6 week’s time.  This year the registration night will take place on the Wednesday October 30th.The following week the league will begin officially on November 6th.  On this particular night all those interested in taking part in the winter league are asked to come along and register to get their number. You will be issued with a number for a cost of €5. This number should be used every night that you run. We will have people on hand at the sports centre that will be available to answer any questions you may have and we will also explain the rules and regulations of the league as well as the two courses of the league .The first official night of the league will be the following week November 6th. For all those that won’t be able to make it to the sports centre on the first night of registration, you may register and get your number on the following Wednesday night. In fact, it’s possible to join the winter league at any stage throughout the course of the league. The cost of the league is €5, this is a once -off payment for your number and then €2 for each night for West Waterford AC club members and €3 for non-members. Last year we introduced the ability to pay in full for the league ,a once off payment, which will save you money if you intend running the league each night. For club members you can pay 30 euro ( this includes the 5 euro once off  number payment) and for non members you can pay a once off payment of 40 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge. This amount will cover you for the full duration of the league.

There was a brilliant performance last Sunday morning at the Berlin marathon by club member Dermot Ryan who recorded a new marathon personal best time of 2.40.53. Super Sunday !!!
 
 
 
 
 
PATRYCJA COMPLETES SNOWDONIA HALF.
 
 
 
 
 
Congratulations to club member Patrycja Daly who last Sunday ran the Snowdonia mountain half marathon (well it actually turned out to be 16 miles!) which were held in atrocious weather conditions,Patrycja ran a time of 5.25.
 
 
 
 
 
ANTHONY  FLYNN GETS TOP 3 IN WICKLOW.
 
 
 
Very well done to club member Anthony Flynn who finished 3rd last Saturday at the Wicklow eco-trail race over a distance of 45k.A brilliant performance by the  Abbeyside man over hard terrain.
