JOE GOUGH IS WORLD OVER 65 MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPION ON THE DOUBLE.

West Waterford's Joe Gough proved once again that he really is the real deal when it comes to masters track racing as last week he added not one but two more world indoors over 65 titles to his long string of achievements in the sport particularly his outstanding accolades in 2018.The championships were held in the city of Torun Poland where a huge team of Irish athletes competed over 7 days of competition. Many Irish medals were won over the week and Joe's two were as sweet as any.The former Mitchell Terrace man who now resides in Owning Co.Kilkenny and is coached by Dick Murphy was achievening his 7th world gold medal in masters athletics an increditable achievement by any standards. After a superb run in the semi final held on Wednesday evening Joe finished 1st in the  800 meters  in heat 2 of 3 clocking a time of 2.33.96 it was onto the final the following day Thursday and he showed why he is a world masters legend when he broke from the field with a Lap to go and raced clear to win in a time of 2.22.06 from German Walter Rentsch 2.24.34 and the bronze was claimed by Britain's  Kevin Archer in a time of 2.25.52.Joe gave an outstanding display on how to run an 800 meters track race when sitting on the shoulder of the leader for 600 meters before making his winning move on the final lap , a move which the rest of the field couldn't match as Joe crossed the finish line with hands high in the air taking the accolade of the excited Irish contingent present in the stadium. The following day Joe was entered for and ran the heats of the 1.500 meter and running the heat one of two he won here to book his place in Saturday's final with a time of 5.08.42.In the final he sat on the shoulder of Brittany's Archer before making his bid for home with 200 meters remaining,he was well clear of the field as he cross the line alone winning in a time of 4.51.39 from Germany's Walter Reatsch second in 4.53.45 with Archer despite leading for most of the race having to settle for bronze in 4.53.68.This 1.500 result was exactly the same placings  as the 800. To round off an outstanding week for Joe was the nees that he smashed his old Irish record in the final of the 1.500 meters when clipping 14 seconds off the old mark indoor which was 5.05.12 with a new standard set now of 4.51, a mighty weeks work once again very well done Joe from all in the club and wider athletics family on your 7th world gold medal and new Irish record.

BRILLIANT START TO 5 WEEK MARK MASON MORTGAGES AND FINANCIAL SERVICES COLLIGAN RUNNING LEAGUE.

There was a brilliant turnout last Wednesday evening in Colligan wood for round one of this year's annual Mark Mason Financial Colligan Spring League. The evening was ideal and on such a nice spring evening where better to be but in the unspoilt surroundings of Colligan wood, a gem on our door step for walkers and runners alike. This year we will have 5 nights in total for the league and to be included in the tables you need to run 4 out of the 5 nights. We got underway  at  6.30 in the presence of our league sponsor Mark Mason. A total of 17 runners completed the 2 laps,We had 18 who ran the 5 mile flat course which is 3 ½ laps of the wood and road and finally 51 took on the challenging 5 mile hill route. This league will continue for the next 4  Wednesday evenings (April 3rd, April 10th, April 17th and finally April 24th) so no excuses folks why not come along and give it a go for yourself  even if you missed the first evening you can still join in at any stage.

The 2 lap challenge saw a big increase on the first night comparing to last years number, we were delighted to see 17 runners sign up on the first night and they were led home by Mark Shalloe running a very good time of 17.18,Mark is in good shape with onset of the GAA season upon us as he will be lining out for the Brickeys, he will of course also be running the club races throughout the summer also. Mark was followed by Noel Hogan in a time of 20.21 and third across the line here was Tony Dwyer 21.07, Tony won this league last year and with 4 nights to count from the 5 he will surely be in the shake up again come the end of April. Onra Power was our First Lady home in a time of 23.27 with Margaret Whelan next in 25.48 and third wa Noelle Nolan in 29.08 Sylvia Lewis just dipped bunder the 30 minute mark with a time of 29.44 and Richie Power likewise was just under the 30 minute barrier when he clocked a time of 29.22. Mc CORMACK DELIVERS BRILLANT PERFORMANCE IN DENMARK AT WORLD CROSS COUNTRY.

Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) delivered a magnificent performance to finish 18th in the senior women’s 10,000m race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark today.Just six months after giving birth, McCormack was back on the world stage and as good as ever in a loaded field where Helen Obiri (Kenya) completed the grand slam of world titles, indoors, outdoors and now on the country. Sara Treacy (Dunboyne) battled to a 73rd place finish.  Cross country is Fionnuala McCormack's favourite discipline and it showed coming in second European, home favourite Anna Moller was 15th, with an exceptional display of gritty running. Seeing was believing on the 2km loop in Aarhus with athletes always either going uphill or downhill and having to traverse a mudpit, sandpit and waterpit. "Everyone knows I love cross country," said McCormack afterwards who had huge praise for the organisers. "They built it up to be something brilliant and I think they pulled it off. The crowds out there were brilliant and the course was good. It felt longer than 10k but it was a good test."Darragh McElhinney (Bantry) and Jamie Battle (Mullingar Harriers) were the first Irish competitors on the day in the U20 men's 8,000m and they finished 53rd and 68th respectively. They got some valuable experience on the unforgiving course with the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin in 2020 in mind. Finally it was the turn of Sean Tobin (Clonmel) and Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock) and they had to battle hard in the men's 10km race which had huge depth throughout. Tobin finished 62nd with Dooney 105th. Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei won the men's race. It was a pulsating day of racing with a carnival atmosphere in Aarhus and the Danes proved to be wonderful hosts.

Also we are continuing our online race series package which will cost you 40 euro. For 2019 we have a few announcements to make regarding the series and these are designed to enhance the enjoyment for all the runners and to make the Summer more interesting!  Going forward we hope to have more runners entered online as it really helps minimize the workload on the day of the run and it also means we can be more organised and this means a better experience for all.

RUNNING QUOTE.

There are few instincts more natural than the body in full motion as it races across a field or through the trees.
