County Title for Chloe Fennell and Kate Killigrew
The county B championships were held in ideal conditions in the Friary last Sunday. West Waterford had two winners Kate Killigrew in the girls under 9 and Chloe Fennell in the under 13. Kate is new to the sport but has been improving each week at training and led all the way in the girls under 9. Chloe Fennell who is back to her best form also led from the start in the girls under 13 and took her first county title.
There were no team prizes in these races but there were medals for the first ten and West Waterford was well represented among the medal winners. Eabha Walsh 4th under 8, Aine O’Neill 4th under 9 and Mikey Mullaney 3rd under 9 were all running for the first time.
Claudia Quarry 4th was the best of the under 11 girls. Emily Murphy finished 6th, with Sheena Mc Guckian 8th, Kate Heffernan 9th, Aoife O’Neill 10th and Hannah Hallahan 13th. In the boys Thomas was the first of our athletes home in 5th place. Liam Hamilton 7th and Matthew Walsh 8th were also among the medal winners. Conor Browne was 14th just ahead of Daley O’Rourke 15th and Ronan Kelleher 16th.
There was some great running from the under 13 girls. Rachel Wyley ran strongly throughout the race to finish 3rd just ahead of the fast finishing Rachel Mc Guickian. Aisling Mullaney 6th, Kristian Murphy 7th, Grainne Lane 8th and Aoibheann Connaughton 9th were all just one place behind each other with Judith Campbell in 14th. Best of the boys was Keelan Dee Carter 6th who finished just one place ahead of Niall Blackwell with Shaun O’ Mahony just one place further back in 8th and Conor Coleman in 11th.
The final races of the day were under 15 boys and girls Grace Heffernan finished strongly to take 3rd with Laura Cusack in 4th and Chris O’Mahony finished off the day with a silver medal when he finished 2nd in the boys race.
Munster Championships next Sunday
The first round of the Munster Championships under 10,12,14,16 and 18 will be held in New Market on Fergus Co. Clare next Sunday with and earlier start time of 11.30. West Waterford will have over 60 athletes competing across all the age groups. A bus will leave the Park Hotel at 7.45 am. Any one travelling on the bus please give your name to Mary Ashe at training on Wednesday. The following have been entered for this championship:
