Kate Carries the Flag for Ireland
The opening ceremony of the first Youth Olympic Championships was held on Saturday last and the honour of carrying the Irish flag for the opening ceremony went to West Waterford’s Kate Veale. In all there will be almost 30 Irish athletes in action across a range of sports including hockey, boxing, triathlon, sailing, modern pentathlon, tennis, rowing as well as athletics. You can find out the latest new of the event on the Irish Olympic Council website or check out the action at www.youtholympicgames.org or www.youtube.com/olympicsinsingapore.2010 . Kate will be in action on Saturday August 21st. The Europeans will be very strong in the walks. Kate goes into the race with the fourth fastest time of the qualifiers, which she achieved, in the qualifying race in Moscow. Since then Kate has walked even faster when winning her first national senior title in July and with the experience she has gained over 5000m over the summer months she must rank as a serious medal contender for a medal in the walk. We wish Kate every success and we know she will give it her best shot as she does in every event she takes part in.
