Weather fails to Dampen Spirits in Glasgow, Athlone and Midleton
Our athletes were in action in three different venues in conditions more akin to cross-country than to mid summer track and field. The rain in Athlone failed to dampen the spirits of our athletes who were competing for the senior club in the national track and field league with wins recorded by Zoe Scanlan, Claire Collins and Lisa Houlihan.
Kate, Ciara and Laurence on International Duty
A wild and windy Glasgow was the venue on Saturday for the Schools International Track and Field Championships. This event brings together the top schools athlete in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. Kate Veale successfully defended the international title she won last year, winning the 3000m walk in a time of 13m 18 secs. Kate was one of five Irish winners on the day. Ireland also provided the winner of the boy’s walk one Evan Lynch whose father Frank hails from Cappah. Despite the poor conditions for throwing Ciara Scanlan improved her personal best with a throw of 35m 48 when finishing 7th in the girls hammer. For young Laurence Houlihan it was a day to forget as conditions made pole-vaulting difficult and he failed to clear his opening height. The Irish team finished second to England and well ahead of both Scotland and Wales.
Small Group Travel to Midleton Sports
Midleton Open Sports were held in the rain on Sunday. The weather kept numbers down and just twelve athletes from West Waterford competed. Caoimhe Dwyer under 12 100m, Micheal Power under 12 600m, Tholm Reddy under 14 800m and long jump and Luke Sheehan under 16 high jump were all winners on the day. Eoin Dwyer was second in the under 14 800m and third in the shot. Kayleigh Norris also finished second in the under 17 800m with Emer Duff not far behind in 3rd. There were also third place finishes for Sean Ronayne in the under 10 300m, Micheal Power under 12 100m, Caoimhe Dwyer under 12 long jump, Tholm Reddy under 14 100m and Luke Sheehan under 16 100m. Well done to all who travelled.
