Club Championships a great success
The club championships concluded on Friday night with some very closely contested distance races. It started at 300m for under 9 girls and boys and went up in distance for each age group finishing with the over 14 800m. At the conclusion of the last race there was a presentation of spike bags to all who had competed in three of the four competitions. This was to highlight the importance of taking part rather than just about winning. Trophies for the winning athletes in each age group will be presented on Wednesdays next. Full results next week.
Kate Named Athlete of the Meet as Munster Claim Tailteann Title
For the third year in a row Munster claimed the girls team title at last weekend’s Tailteann Games. Once again West Waterford athletes were prominent among the medal winners and points scorers. Kate Veale retained her 3000m walks title in a new record of 13.16.3. Kate took 23sec off the record she set last year and was almost three minutes ahead of the second placed athlete, this is a clear indication that preparations for Singapore are going well. Kate was awarded the Roisin O’ Callaghan Trophy for the best walker and later in the day she was awarded the Fr Lonregan Trophy for the outstanding athlete of the day.
In the hammer event Munster athletes placed first and second with Ciara Scanlan taking the silver medal with a throw of 34m.42 . Leann Herlihy cleared 2m.30 in the pole vault to win the bronze medal and Kate Hickey who is a year under age finished 4th in the discus.
In the boys events Martin Houlihan, Laurence Houlihan and Jonathon Foley all tied for first place when they all cleared 3m 60. Kate Veale, Laurence Houlihan and Ciara Scanlan were all selected on the Irish Schools team for the Schools International in Glasgow in July.
The club would like to thank all those who supported their annual flag day last weekend.
