Success for All Local Schools in Cross Country

The East Munster Schools cross-country championships were held in ideal conditions on Thursday at the new WIT Sports Campus Carriganore. Tom O’Brien and his crew had a very well laid course. There was a fine wide start, which gave everyone an equal chance. The finish was near the start that was good for spectators. All the local schools were represented in all eight races from minor to senior and west Waterford athletes helped their teams to qualify for the Munster Schools Championships. The first fifteen and the first four teams in every race qualified for the Munster championships, which will be held in C.I.T.  on Feb. 9th.

In the minor girls race St Augustine’s were second and Meanscoil San Nioclas were third. The individual winner was West Waterford’s Aoife Hamilton and Chloe Fennell, Bronagh Condon, Meg Ryan, Dairina Shanley, Hannah Power all figured on the teams. Kate McGrath representing Ard Scoil qualified as an individual. In the junior girls the Ard Scoil team that finished third included Cliona Ryan, Laura Cusack and Grace Heffernan. The inter girls race was a very close fought event and Lucy O’Brien was a scoring member of the Blackwater team that finished 3rd. In the senior girls race the Ard Scoil team that finished third included Kaylee Norris, Una McGrath, Emer Duff and Jennifer Meehan.

In the boys events Micheal Power led the St. Augustine’s team to third place in the minor boys race. In the same race Eoin O’Brien representing Blackwater finished 4th and qualified as an individual. In the junior boys Liam O’Reilly led the Meanscoil to the bronze medals.
