WOODIES A.A.I. SENIOR INDOORS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
GOLD FOR MALIKOVA AND BRONZE FOR COSTIN AND VEALE.
The National Woodies DIY sponsored indoors were held over tow days Saturday and Sunday last in the magnificent surroundings of the Odyssey Arena Belfast. West Waterford had one of its largest contingent ever at the championships with eight athletes participating.Pride of place over the two days from a club point of view has to go to Suzana Malikova on her terrific 3.000 gold medal winning performance on Friday evening when she walked the fastest time in the world this year to take the victory in 12.36.43, this was also just 2 seconds outside her countries Slovakian record, A top performance from a real medal contender for this years upcoming European championships in Barcelona, In the same race 16 year old Kate Veale got her first taste of Senior race walking and gave a superb display of her undoubted talent in race walking when taking the bronze medal in a time of 13.18.44,this was just two hundreds of a second outside the Irish Junior record which she set two weeks previous in Nenagh. Taking the silver was Laura Reynolds of Mohill AC who was the defending champion from 2009.Laura’s time was 13.09.99.In the Men’s race over 5.000 meters Robert Heffernan of Togher AC won gold in a very fast 19.24.64 from Colin Griffin Ballinamore AC who just managed to hold off the late challenge of the fast finishing Jamie Costin to claim Silver in 19.47.34 with Jamie showing very good early season form taking bronze in 19.48.73.Raivis Zakis competing in the 3.000 meters finished 17th of the 21 starters in very fast race, Raivis can be pleased taking 16 seconds off his personal bets time indoors for the distance he clocked 8.45.43.former West Waterford athlete Alan O’Brien who now runs with Crusaders AC in Dublin took the gold in 8.11.44.James Ledingham was the unluckiest athlete at the championships when failing by just one place to reach the finals of the 400 meters for Saturday James ran a time of 1.56.56 which was just outside the best qualifying times for the final. In the Pole Vault we had the three Houlihans Lisa, Thomas and Liam. Lisa finished 5th with a vault of 2.80.Liam’s vault of 3.80 saw him finish 10th overall and Thomas finished joint 4th on a count back with an excellent 4.40.One of the highlights of the weekend was the performance of one of the countries brightest young stars Ciara Mageean from City of Lisburn in the 800m she simply outran all her rivals as she sprinted to victory in a time of 2:07.82 which is a new Irish junior record, bettering Arlene Smith’s 1991 record of 2:08.74.All in all it was a great weekends indoor athletics and all looks bright for this years Europeans with some of our Senior athletes showing excellent form. This mixed with some very talented young athletes on the horizon the future for the sport in this country look’s very positive indeed.
ALLROUNDER SPORTS WINTER LEAGUE
NOT LONG TO GO NOW!!
It’s when people start asking you where the mystery tour is going to be that you know that the end is in sight! With just tonight and next week left, it’s hard to believe that the time has gone so fast. Time really does fly when you’re having fun and it goes even faster when you are involved in the winter league. Tonight is week 13 but I am sure that there will be nothing unlucky about tonight for any of the athletes. Despite improving week after week and so many thinking that they are at their limit, further limits were reached last week as it was a case of full effort from everyone with some people improving by up to two minutes. When it comes to running, we are all capable of going well beyond our perceived capabilities when the need arises and that need comes in the form of another athlete either passing you out or another athlete in front of you that you are trying to pass out. We all have double the motivation every night, catch those in front of you while at the same time getting to the finish line before all those behind you, a piece of cake really!! Seriously, you have all done better than you could ever have possibly have hoped for so there is no reason why the next two nights should be any different and don’t forget for your efforts you will be awarded with a fun night out somewhere in West Waterford in the form of the Mystery Tour.
MYSTERY TOUR
Plans are well underway for this year’s Mystery Tour and before you even try, none of us know where it’s going apart from one person who assures us that a great night is in store for us all. At the Mystery Tour, the overall winners in both the short route and the long route will be announced along with all the other divisional winners. The identity of these winners will only be revealed on the night and all those that took part in the winter league are all invited along. The Stables Bar in Abbeyside will be the starting point for us all and from there a bus will ferry all the athletes to the chosen venue for a night of fun and craic. We will be taking names for the bus at tonight’s winter league and 5 euros secures your seat on the bus: be sure and get your name in as soon as possible. We will also be taking entries tonight for anyone looking to join the spring series. Entry to this race closes at the Kilmac race and it costs 5 euros to join.
DIVISION TABLES
By now, you are all well in tune with the division tables. Whatever division you are in now is the division you will be in until the end. As tonight is week 13, we will add on your score from tonight and then pick your best 12 nights out of the total of 13 nights so far. This will give you all a stronger indication as to where you stand on the division tables. At the moment Brian Hourigan in the short route and Kevin Hickey in the long route are the current leaders but when everyone’s best 12 nights are taken into account it may very well be a different story. Tonight might be your best or worst night or it could be the last night of the league that’s your best or worst so it’s all to play for by everybody as of yet there is no clear winner.
STARTNG TIMES FOR TONIGHT
It will be a case of all systems go tonight with the starting times. Everybody’s starting time tonight will be based on your fastest time so far in the league. All those in the long route need to subtract their fastest time from 60 minutes to get their starting time. If your best time is 45 minutes then your starting time will be 15 minutes. If it’s 55.20 then your starting time will be 4.40. The runners in the short run need to subtract their best time from 30 minutes. If your fastest time is 17.45, then your starting time will be 12.15 (30minutes – 17.45). Please ensure that you are at the door in plenty of time for your starting time. Some people have been going off at a different time to their allocated starting time which makes the results process much more difficult. Should this happen tonight, you will be placed as the last runner on the night.
KILBRIEN’S KEVIN HICKEY UPS IT A GEAR TO TAKE CONTROL
Not only has Kevin Hickey upped the pace significantly but he has also changed direction. Not too long ago Kevin had slipped down to fifth place but a concerted effort on his part meant that he moved back to third place and after last week’s run where he improved by a minute and a half, he is now at the helm and is more determined than ever to stay at the top. As far as anyone can testify to, it’s never happened before that somebody moved downwards and then crawled or in Kevin’s case powered back up to the top of the tables. The winter league cup has been previously won by a Kilbrien native, namely Pat Dunford, so it could very well be that Kevin will be the second Kilbrien person to take the honours. That said, all won’t be revealed until everyone’s best 12 nights have been taken into account so it’s up to you all to keep up the effort over the final hurdles. Angeline Drennan is a mere 3 points in arrears in second place while An Rinn resident, Micheal O’ Chuirrin is in third spot. Luke Cunningham is certainly in the shake up as well and has been making impressive improvements of late. In fact, all those in division one are well capable of taking the title and it won’t be long more now until we know. BRIAN HANGS ON BUT ONLY JUST!
Brian Hourigan is still at the top of the division tables but the pressure has intensified as Kelly Cantwell is hot on his heels and now only 8 points separate the two athletes with Sinead de Faoite hovering on the outskirts waiting to take their place. This division is also very close and as in the case of the long route the winner won’t be known until we calculate each runner’s best 12 nights. Significant improvements have were made last week and I think that tonight there are many that have their sights set on 21 minutes. The motto for all runners at this stage is – “catch all those in front of you and try not to let anybody pass you out” and should we all stick to this I think we will have many a happy face heading home tonight. Last week there were a considerable number of you who ran outside of 21 minutes but a determined effort by you all should see you run well under that time. MICHAEL ROCHE CARPETS SPRING SERIES
The above series has now reached the half- way stage with 2 of the 4 races now completed. The remaining two races are the Kilmac 5 mile and the Dungarvan 10K. The following are the names of all those entered in the series to date. We will be taking entries for the series at tonight’s winter league and next week and also at the Kilmac 5.After that, entry to the series will be closed so if you haven’t already joined be sure to do either before or on February 21st which is the date of the Kilmac 5 mile road race. MALLOW AC TEN MILE
The Mallow AC 10 mile road race was held last Sunday, February 7. This race is the second race in the John Buckley Sports Munster Classic and it had a new race start and finish from previous years. The organisers were delighted with the response given that the race was only a week after the first race of the classic which was our very own ten mile. The club had a good representation on the day with just one prize-winner among the group. Tara Roche for the second week running picked up the first junior female prize as she also was successful in the same category last Sunday. Despite it being a tougher course and having a slight wind to contend with along the way, Tara managed to run the same distance a good 3 minutes faster than the previous week which was great running indeed. Josie Ui Chuirrin was 3rd in her category and Marie Moore ran a blinder on the day to come second in her category. At the time of going to print, a full set of results was not available but will be printed in next week’s notes. Colin Merritt of Carrignavar won the race with a time of 53.17. Debela Lebeka of Limerick was second in 53.29 and Brian Murphy of Carrick-on-Suir filled the thrd spot in 54.32. Lorraine Manning of Raheny AC was a clear winner in the ladies in a time of 60.53. Tracey Roche of Doneen AC was second in 63.52 and after a great battle Mary Sweeney of St. Finbarr’s was third. The third race of the series is the famous Ballycotton 10 which will be held on March 21st.
ALL IRELAND MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY
This Friday is the closing date for entries to the All Ireland Master’s Cross Country Championships. The venue this year is in Boyle, Co. Roscommon and will take place on Sunday, February 21st. If you haven’t already contacted Ann (086 0619711) or Norma (087 9385965) please do so immediately. The Munster Masters Indoors Championships which were cancelled in January are due to be rescheduled on Sunday, March 21st. All those who were entered for the January event are automatically entered for this.
COUNTY BOARD MEETING
The Athletics County Board will hold a meeting next Monday night at 8 pm in St. Augustine’s College.
QUANTUM LIFE DUNGARVAN 10.
THE LOCALS DO US PROUD.
The 19th Annual Quantum Life sponsored Dungarvan 10 mile road race has been well documented and spoken about over the past week or so and rightly so as it was without doubt one of the most impressive sporting days ever witnessed in the town. With the huge influx of over 1.000 visiting runners including a grand total of 141 local runners descended on the town the atmosphere around the Youghal Rd starting area was electric as the runners lined up for the road runners classic distance of 10 miles. The holding of such a mammoth event takes much hard work incorporating a big local community involvement and goodwill from all sides. This
the club got in abundance before, during and since the race. The ongoing feed back to the event by the travelling runners is more that positive and there is a page of comments and hundreds of photos on our club web site at www.westwaterfordathketics.org have a look for yourself it will be worth it. The success of the event was in no small way attributed to our main sponsor Quantum Life and singling out Mel Shanley for his positive and encouraging input into the event not alone this year but over the earlier years when we set out our goal of make this race one of the best ten mile road races in the country, We have now in these short couple of years succeeded in our goals with the thanks for our loyal sponsor. This event will grow even bigger in the coming years and is established now as a very important event in the towns yearly sporting calendar, bring much welcomed revenue to West of the county at a time when every little piece of revenue is vital to a town like Dungarvan.As said above the local runners came out in force for the race and it was very noticeable how many personal best times were recorded proving once again that we have a gem of a fast 10 mile course here which is important to 10 mile road racers. We are also proud to have had the first two finishers across the line in Sandis Bralitis and Raivis Zakis two of the country’s top road racers and we are delighted to have them in out club West Waterford. It is impossible to mention all the good performances on the day but some that we do know of were that of Shane Power his coming back gradually and were delighted to see Shane back in such good form, Des Feeney ever so close now to breaking the 60 in minutes. Dermot Ryan what was it 4 minutes or some such thing inside his p.b. what a run. Our fist Lady finisher Corinna Walsh what a performance she put in on home turf under six and a half minute’s per mile. Our second Lady home almost two minutes inside her P.B. well done Norma, super running also. Liam Budds how quickly is he coming back into his running form watch him for the summer series. Martin Curran clipping around in just over the 7 minute’s per mile from the Old Parish Man, Sharon Duggan, all can be said is there’s some stuff in this Lady, Mark Cliffe a huge p.b. for him, Micheál Callaghan must have drank a fair share of that Lucozade sport he kindly sponsored cause he had a blinder on the day, even more that 33% longer or is it faster! Kieran Coleman just a tad over the 8 minute pace, great running Kieran hope to see you for the Friary leagues this spring. Triona Wall another to record a p.b. and then feed an army. Catriona Kiely stern running from the Colligan Woman, Liam Byrne another p.b.here, The other Shane Power what a run he had also. Jacinta Sheil 3 minutes faster that last year, There were lots more great performances Tom Condon, Ted O’Leary, Mary Hearney, Gillian Mc Namara, Anne Massey, Noelle Conway and may others also, my final comments goes to two Ladies who epitomise what this running lark is really all about and that’s the mother and daughter team of Marie and Patrice Moore an inspiration to all in my book, Go out there and just do it. well done to all role on 2011.And get your entry in on time.!!

So which county came out on top for having the largest number of runners participating at the recent Quantum Life Dungarvan 10.The boys and Girls from Cork is the answer and they had an overwhelming majority with 287 runners taking part on the day with 197 from Waterford followed by Tipperary on 61.We had 20 counties represented at least and possibly more as the stats below are just taken from the online entries and don’t include the postal entries. In anyone’s book this is superb to say the least to have such a wide representation of runners from around the country.

98 CLUBS REPRESENTED AT QUANTUM LIFE DUNGARVAN 10.
When we look at the stats for the clubs represented at our race it is most encouraging to see that a huge figure of 89 different clubs took part and we also had 433 runners taking part who are not affiliated to any club. West Waterford lead the way here of course with an astounding 141 runners taking part followed by our near neighbours Waterford AC with 51,Midleton AC brought along a healthy 30 runners and just behind them was Eagle AC from Cork on 27,Clonmel 24 and Slaney Olympic in Wexford had 20 participating. No matter how large or small a club representation was on the day they were all very welcome and all helped to make the day the success that it was.

BAUSCH AND LOMB KILMACTHOMAS 5.
The next big club event will be on Sunday February 21st at11 AM the Annual Bausch and Lomb sponsored Kilmacthomas 5 mile road race will take place. This is race number three in this years Michael Roche Carpets spring series of road races. And please note it is the final opportunity to enter the series. The organising committee headed up by Michael and Nicola Dee in Kilmacthomas always but a great amount of work into this event and this year will be no exception, Two great club stalwarts along with all the other members and supporters we have in Kilmacthomas whoa re loyal supporters of the club, so we request all our members to come along and support their efforts by running on the day. Entries will be taken at the community hall Kilmacthomas at the top of the town with the entry fee being 8 Euro. Shower facilities will also be available in this hall after the event for both Men and Women. With the help of the very generous sponsorship very kindly given by Bausch and Lomb a very attractive prize fund will be on offer with a total of over 1.000 Euro cash for the top competitors and plenty of spots for down the field finishers also. Presentation of prizes will take place at Kirwans Bar on the Main St. where sandwiches and refreshments will be available to all.

MEN-1st 2nd and 3rd, 1st over 40,45,50,55 and 1st Junior.
LADIES- 1st 2nd and 3rd, 1st over 35,40,45,50,
28th ANNUAL DUNGARVAN 10K.
The fourth and final race in the Michael Roche carpets spring series the 28th Annual Dungarvan 10 k will take place on Sunday February 28th next at 11 am Please note we have a change to the race head quarters this year as we will be using the Dungarvan Sports Centre at Quanns for the entries, changing, showers post race refreshments and presentation of prizes. Our good friends at Dungarvan G.A.A club have a match pencilled in for the same morning so for this year we will be using the sports centre for the race. The race start and finish plus the usual canal Brickey course will remain the same, please spread the word on this important notice.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP.

COMERAGH CRYSTAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION.
CORINNA WALSH WINS FOR JANUARY.
The club’s Athlete of the Year competition for 2010 got off to a flying start in the month of January with athletes earning points from a multitude of events. In this competition athletes are awarded 1 point each time they run in an event regardless of their finishing position and if it’s a championship event they will earn 2 points. With cross-country events and track and field it was a busy month for the club’s athletes and on the last day of the month when all the score were totted up it transpired that there were three athletes with the highest score of 8 points. These were Richie Power, Brigid Coffey and Corinna Walsh. All three earned double points when competing in the All-Ireland Masters with Richie gaining two points more when he competed in the Combined Events but the girls balanced out these 2 points when they competed in the Senior Cross Country in Carrignavar. In situations like this when athletes have an even score we have to look back to the previous month to decide on the eventual winner and because Corinna had a higher score than either Richie or Brigid for the month of Decemeber she is deemed to be the first recipient of the club’s athlete of the year prize. No doubt Brigid and Richie will feature strongly in the competition over the coming months but for now its congratulations to Corinna who will add this title to the numerous other titles she has won lately. This competition is ongoing and so from now until the end of the year all the club’s athletes will get points anytime they run in an event.
