Wet Cold Miserable Day for County Championships

The second round of the county championships was held in winter like conditions on Sunday May 13th. Despite the bad weather a large number of athletes travelled from west Waterford to take part. All the Discus competitions were cancelled for safety reasons and will be held at a later date.

 

Gold medals were won by:

Rory Conway Ball throw under 11,

Under 13, Aidan Bergin high jump, Cian Ryan 600m,

Under 14, David Early hammer, shot, walk. Kate Veale walk, Chloe Walsh hammer

Under 15, Zoe Scanlon hamer, javelin, Mary Frost walk, Lisa Houlihan, long jump, 200m, 80m, Declan Palmer shot, walk

Under 16, Joe Conway walk, Aaron Meehan, hammer, shot, Natasha Cantwell javelin Meg Fitzgerald, hammer,

Under 17, Louise O’Neill hammer, Patrick Palmer, hammer, 200m,

Triple jump,

Under 18, Mark Shalloe 800m,

 

The following won silver medals;

Under 11, Shannon O’Brien, long jump, Sarah Wyley, 600m,long jump, Tholm Reddy 600m

Under 12, Michael Coleman, 600m

Under 13, Aidan Bergin, 600m, Kate Hickey, Javelin

Under 14, David Early, 800m, Kate Veale 800m, Siobhan Noonan, javelin,

Under 15, Darragh O’Riordan, walk, Michael Tutty 200m, shot, Aisling Power, hammer, Lisa Houlihan, javelin

Under 16, Daniel Mc Carthy 200m, Joe Conway, hammer, Natasha Cantwell,

Under 17, Patrick Palmer, shot

 

Bronze medals were won by the following athletes

Under 11. Cliona Ryan 600m

Under 13, Cian Ryan high jump, hurdles, Chloe Lake, long jump,

Under 14, Rachael Phelan, hammer, Chloe Walsh hurdles

Under 15, Aisling Power, Long Jump

Under 16, Joe Conway, shot, Aaron Meehan, triple jump

 

The final competitions of the day were the relays best of the west Waterford teams were the under 16 boys Joe Conway, Daniel McCarthy, Brian Hallissey, Micheal Tutty who finished second. The under 16 girls team of Aisling Power, Lisa Houlihan, Rebecca Maher and Claire Collins finished third as did the under 12 team of Gemma Wyley, Niamh Clarke, Sarah Wyley and Margaret Frost.

Many of West Waterford’s athletes were in action for their schools at this event. There were wins for Mark Shalloe (steeplechase) David McCarthy (1500m) Lisa Houlihan (Pole Vault & Triple jump) Kevin Harty (high jump). Silver Medals were won by Kate Veale (walk) Meg Fitzgerald (hammer) Zoe Scanlon (discus) Claire Collins (high jump) Daniel Mc Carthy (mile) Patrick Palmer (pole vault) Joe Conway (walk) Laurence Houlihan(pole vault) Emma Dunne (pole vault). Bronze medals were won by Zoe Scanlon (javelin) Eadaoin Ashe (discus) Alan Akehurst (walk) Joe Conway (pole vault) Kevin Harty ( triple jump) and Aisling Fennell (pole vault) makin it a very successful day. All these athletes will be in action again at the Kit Kat All Ireland Schools finals in two weeks time.
