ALL ROUNDER SPORTS WINTER LEAGUE 2010

The second phase of the All-rounder Sports winter league kicks off tonight at the usual venue-the sports centre, Quanns, Dungarvan at 7.20 pm. A large crowd is expected for the first night of 2010 and we hope that all those of you who have made New Year resolutions to improve your health and fitness will come on down and join the league. If tonight is your first night please come along around 7 o’ clock so that we can issue you with a number and explain the procedure to you. Newcomers are welcome for each night of the league and it’s never too late to join up so if you have yet to sign up why not come along tonight and get your New Year resolutions off to a perfect start. Now that we all have had a break from the league it’s time to get back on track and concentrate on the next seven weeks which is all that is left of the league. There were eight nights before Christmas with seven nights remaining and with things really beginning to take shape and get exciting they are guaranteed to go quickly. All runners have had eight weeks of  running which brought on considerable improvement in all and the next seven weeks will bring further improvements, fast times and super performances from everybody so make sure to come along. The goal is still the same, improve your running time each week and earn as little points as possible each night. The starting times will vary each week in order to make each run as interesting as possible and also to give us all that extra push and motivation to get to the finishing line as quickly as possible. Don’t forget your reflective bib and your number for tonight. See you at the Sports Centre weather permitting. Should the poor weather conditions continue it may be necessary to cancel the winter league in the interest of safety. If the winter league course is deemed unsafe we will endeavour to contact as many of the winter league participants as possible, but you may ring any of the below numbers if you wish to confirm whether the league is going ahead or not. Gerry 086 3503571, James 086 8184762, Ann 086 0619711 and Norma 087 9385965

WINTER LEAGUE DIVISION TABLES

The winter league tables have now been established with ten runners in each division. The runners that are currently in the top ten are in the first division and the next ten are in the second division and so on down the line.

  The points beside your name are the total number of points that you have accumulated so far in the league.

 Even if you miss a night you will still be allocated points and at the end of the league we will get everybody’s best 12 nights/points and the runner with the least number of points will be declared the winner.

 There will be movement between divisions up to week 12. This means that you may be in division three and then a good night’s run may move you up to division two or likewise a night where you don’t improve your time by much may mean you could move down a division. With very few points between some of the runners there will be lots of movement between the divisions.

 After week 12, the divisions will be locked. This means that when the results for week 12 have been taken into account and the divisions made out, each runner will stay in the division they are in until the end of the league. If you end up in division 4 after week 12 then you will stay in division 4 to the end and each runner in that division will do their best to get to the top of their respective decision. This applies to all runners in both the short and the long route. The overall winner may come from any division. If you end up in division 3 after week 12 but collect very few points for week 13, 14 and 15 it may well mean that you could be the person with the least points and the eventual winner.

 Your final score after the 15 weeks will be determined by your best 12 nights. You do get points on the nights that you miss but everybody must run at least 10 nights to qualify.

 After week 13, we will calculate everybody’s best 12 nights so far and this will give you an indication as to where you are in relation to the tables. We will also do the same after week 14. Please bear in mind though that it may well happen that the last night of the league may be your best or worst night which will alter your score again so the winner of both the short and the long route won’t be clear right until the very end so it’s up to each and every one of you to give it your best shot over the next seven weeks.

CURRENT LEADERS OF THE DIVISION TABLES

The division tables are as close as they can get right now with only a few points separating some runners. There have been nights whereby for every second that the clock is ticking there have been two or three athletes crossing the finishing line together so if you find yourself 30 0r 40 points behind the next person in your division an extra few seconds will really help to close the gap. Right now, there is no clear winner in either route. Ann Whelan with 283 points is the current leader of the long route by virtue of an 8 point lead over Micheal O Cuirrin who has 291 points.  Kilbrien’s Kevin Hickey is third overall on 335 but a good run from Kevin tonight may well see him at the top of the table going into week 10. Alan Cullen is leading division two but can’t afford to take it easy tonight if he wants to stay at the top because only three points in arrears is Joe Barry so it may well be Joe or Alan or indeed anybody else from division two that might be in the lead after tonight. Long time leader in the short route, Ray Power, is now in second place but is only behind by 12 points so he may well regain his place at the top after tonight. Brian Hourigan is the present leader of the short route and he will need to pull out all the stops to keep himself there. Deiredre O’ Donnell needs to close the gap by a mere 13 points to equal the score of Maria Kiely who leads division 2. Colette Bannon and Claire Power have a battle on their hands in division 3 with just 3 points separating the two. Below are the first two in each division with their points which shows just how close it really is and no doubt next week may see a whole new list of names at the top.

STARTING TIMES FOR TONIGHT

The starting times for tonight will be ten second intervals between each group. Please check your starting time in the hall downstairs and make sure that you are out at the front door in plenty of time. The short space between each group guarantees a good time for everybody as we will all be watching everybody in front of us and doing our best not to let those behind us catch up to us which is what the winter league is all about.  Again, please check that the winter league is going ahead tonight before leaving home as it may need to be cancelled due to the current weather conditions.

QUANTUM LIFE DUNGARVAN TEN MILE ON JANUARY 31ST 2010

LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE FOR 2010

If looking for a challenge for 2010, why not sign up for the Quantum Life Dungarvan 10 mile road race. The race itself will be held on Sunday, January 31st at 1 pm and it’s certainly not too late to get a bit of training in before the big day. This particular race is one of the biggest and most popular races in the country with athletes of all standards taking part each year. The course is fast and flat and the buzz and atmosphere on the day will help you get to the finishing line. In athletics, the ten mile races are seen as a challenge but within everybody’s capabilities and for all those doing the long route in the winter league and even the short route it’s a target for you all in the next couple of weeks. Those of you who are participating in the long route are well used to running close on 6 miles each week. If you were to get out a few more times over the coming weeks and build up towards 8 or 8.5 miles you would be well able for the ten mile. Please bear in mind that the when it comes to ten miles or any long distance “it’s the pace that kills and not the distance”- basically, this means that if you go off too fast you will burn out but if you get the pace right then you will be able to keep going. The pace you run at the winter league is fast and you certainly wouldn’t train or run a ten mile at the same pace. The longer the distance you run the slower your pace should be in order to stay going. After all, if this is your first ten mile you want to enjoy the experience and the more ten mile races you do the more you can work on your pace. For those doing the short route, we would love to see some of you doing the ten mile as well. Ideally over the next few weeks you should aim to train 4 times a week, this may sound a lot but it’s just for a few weeks and it will be worth it come January 31st when you cross the finishing line after running ten miles, it will be a great achievement and an accomplishment and will be more than worth the effort. We have had quite a few sign up for their first ten-mile and you could be one of these. We are available at the desk tonight at the league for help and advice or we can also be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Three weeks from Sunday is the day, so get on those runners and clock up those miles!

Mallow AC has been promoting a 10-mile race for a number of years over a nice flat loop comprising of town and country roads and it has met with unanimous approval. Mallow is also well served with a good road and rail network, making the venue very central for people traveling. Last year saw a record turnout of 572 finishers and the message this year is to arrive in plenty of time so that the organisers can cater for the even larger entry expected. The race has a new sponsor this year in Kostal. Details, see notes in this issue or log onto www.mallowac.ie

A new course was introduced in 2004 and this year there is a slight alteration to the start although the main route remain’s the same. 2009 saw a huge turnout with a total of 895 finishers. The club has big plans for this race which is now our flagship event. Please note that the race starts at 1pm and pre-entries close on January 18th – details on www.westwaterfordathletics.org

One of the oldest 'tens' in the country, outside of Ballycotton, the introduction of the Spring Series has certainly benefited this Clare race which also attracted a record 270 finishers in 2008.The slightly undulating circuit on the outskirts of The Burren contains some stunning early spring scenery, passing through the tourist village of Corrofin. The race is also an idea opportunity to enjoy an early-season break in ideal outdoor surroundings. Also, like Mallow, there is a 10km walk which starts at 1.30pm.

The three races above are all organised by enthusiastic runners, so therefore you can be sure of a warm welcome and a well promoted event, with free refreshments and results. Give them your support, they deserve it - and we also need to keep these races going at the classic distance of 10 miles on the road!

€2,200 RAISED AT ST. STEPHEN’S DAY JOLLY JAUNT.

The Annual St Stephen’s Day fun run/walk went ahead again on St. Stephen’s day, this years chosen charity was Our Ladies children’s Hospital Crumlin and great numbers turned up to support this worthy cause making it once again a very successful event. Despite the spoil sport weather experienced over the festive season over 200 runners and walkers turned out at Dungarvan club pavilion where the organisers took the wise decision to hold the run over the sports fields rather than the roads,All were delighted to be out and  about on such a frosty morning and to take part and most importantly to support this year’s very worthy cause. There was the usual mixture of walkers and runners with some opting for two laps of the playing fields while others did the 8 laps covering the 5 mile distance. Which ever distance we did sur it was a chance to get a run in over the Christmas while supporting a worthwhile charity, not to mention work off that Christmas dinner. As mentioned above all money donated on the day went towards St. Teresa's and St. John's Wards in Crumlin Children's Hospital. Dublin. We asked all taking part to donate at their own discretion and to say all gave generously would be an under statement, Indeed, a big thanks has to go to all the walkers and runners who made the day the success that it was with well over 2.000 euro collected, A lot of background work goes into organising an event like this and congratulations go to the local organising committee involved in this years charity along with Dungarvan G.A.A.club. As usual, there was a huge array of spot prizes to be won,  With the warm soup and sandwiches provided by the ladies of the catering crew, we all went home well fed and happy. A sincere thanks also goes to all those who helped with the catering. We hope to see you at next year’s run; it’s definitely one to put in the diary.
