GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIES
DOOCEY’S ORIEL BAR BALLYMACARBRY 5 MILE ROAD RACE
The penultimate race of the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series, the Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race, took place last Friday evening in the picturesque Nire Valley. It was a super race thanks to the fantastic conditions in the wood. The wood and indeed the whole course of the race were in impeccable shape thanks to the huge efforts of all the gang from Ballymac that left no stone unturned in the pre-race preparations. It’s all the little things that make a great race and thanks to Frank Bolger, who had put out all the signs for the race as well as driving the tail-car. It was Frank who way back in 1995 got this race underway and it was wonderful to have him involved and it’s a sure sign of a great race that 16 years on the race is as strong as ever and looks set to grow in the future. The major attraction is the variety it offers, it really has a bit of everything for the runners, a good start to allow you to settle into a rhythm and then onto the wood section, the uphill and the downhill and a nice flat last mile to the finish so it’s no wonder athletes travel from near and far to take part. Practically everybody found the hill no bother at all this year, the underfoot conditions were great in the wood .We were blessed once again with the weather which led to some very good times being recorded. The numbers may have been down somewhat but there was a great buzz and atmosphere at the start line and at 7.30 p.m. it was Frank Bolger that signalled the start of the race with the starting gun. Straight away there was a breakaway group of Frank Quinlan, Brian Murphy, Paul Deegan and Frank Hayes. Brian Murphy was out to record yet another win in the series to add to his other victories and he wasn’t disappointed as he came home a clear winner in a time of 25.53, this was much improved from his time of last year which was 26.23, great running from Brian and he is now on target to win the 2011 series. Brian had over half a minute to spare over Frank Quinlan of Waterford and in third place was Paul Deegan of Gowran A.C. The first club man home was John Leahy who had a super run to clock 29.17 and John along with Andrew Leary were the only two club members to break the 30 minute barrier. Andrew Leary was the second club member home and he also won the 0/45 category and the third club member home was Trevor Mason in a time of 30.26 followed closely by the ever improving Tom Leahy in 30.37. The fifth athlete home on the night was Liam Budds who was just outside of 31 minutes recording 31.08.

A CLEAN SWOOP FOR WEST WATERFORD’S LADIES
It was literally a clean swoop for West Waterford at the Ballymac 5 as the top three individual places as well as the age categories were all filled by athletes from West Waterford. The absence of athletes such as Corinna Walsh, Angela McCann and Martina O’ Dwyer meant that it was left to the West Waterford ladies to battle it out. The winner on the night was Norma Wall and in second place was the ever improving Karen Ryan. Karen has upped her training regime this year with great effect and it certainly clarifies the old saying “you get out what you put in”. Karen recorded a personal best at the recent GSK race and she used her experience here to pace herself correctly and well deserved to take second place. This now leaves Karen just one point behind Liz Nolan of Waterford on the summer series league tables so another fine run by Karen at Ardmore could very well see her take third place overall for the 2011 series and if she achieves this it will be a another 1-2-3 for West Waterford’s ladies as the top two positions are secured by Corinna Walsh and Norma Wall regardless of the outcome of the Ardmore race. In third place was Josie Ui Chuirrin and this will move her along nicely on the league tables as well. Angeline Drennan had a great run and was unlucky to be on the wrong side of 37 minutes but come Ardmore she will definitely be well under that time. It’s great to see Ann Dunford back on form again and she was well inside her pre-race target. Kathleen Keane was once again successful in her section and last Friday was no exception with another win for her and her training partner Helene Hayes was also successful in her category. Jackie Tobin’s training paid dividends for her as she too won her category with a great time of 46.22 so well done to one and all.

BALLYMACARBRY 5-THANKS TO ONE AND ALL
It really was a community effort in among all in Ballymacarbry and West Waterford would like to thank all those involved. A lot of work and effort went on behind the scenes by so many. Firstly, our sincere thanks go to the Doocey family of Doocey’s bar who once again this year sponsored the race as well as providing the tea and wonderful hospitality. Thanks to Tony and Helena and also to Michael who was on hand to present the prizes. Once again, thanks to Frank Bolger for starting the race and putting out the signs. It was great to see the 800 metres and the 400 metres markings on the final mile as it certainly kept the athletes going over the final hurdles. Thanks to all at the community centre for permitting the use of the fabulous facilities there, entries were taken at the hall and changing and showers were also available which was really appreciated by one and all, a big thank you to Danny O’ Rourke for his assistance with this. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank John Condon for permitting the course to go through his land; his gesture was very much appreciated. The very first Ballymacarbry race took place in 1995 and it’s fair to say that the race has flourished since then and 16 years later it is still attracting great numbers and it’s onwards and upwards for this race. Thanks to the stewards and the gardai who were out on the course for the duration of the race. Thanks also to Angeline and Clare for making the sandwiches, to Ann for the prizes and to Breeda, Kathleen, Bernie and Liam for the entries. Thanks to Conor and Jamie who were out on the course and on the camera and to Michael, Albert and Tony on the van and P.A. Many hands make light work!
WEST WATERFORD AC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2011
After race 9 in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series last Friday evening, the Doocey’s Bar Ballymacarbry 5 mile, we have only one change to the category leaders. Pascal Proctor has taken over the lead in the men’s over 55 category. At this stage, with only one race left, a number of our leaders have their categories wrapped up; however, a number of categories are still up for grabs with the result in the last race in Ardmore all important. The championship is confined to fully paid- up club members and uses the summer series races to determine who the best athlete in the club is in the usual race categories. You must take part in a minimum of 8 races to be included. The winner of each of these categories come the final race in Ardmore on August 12th next will be deemed to be the club champion for 2011 and each one will be presented with a nominal prize.

AMBER PETROLEUM FIT4LIFE LEAGUE
LOVELY EVENING FOR RUNNING IN THE FRIARY COLLEGE
It was lovely evening in the Friary College last Tuesday evening as round 5 of the Amber Garage Fit4Life league took place in warm temperatures and summer conditions. The Friary is in perfect order at the moment and everyone participating really enjoyed the experience. This league has 3 nights remaining but if you think you would like to get involved you just need to come along to the Friary around 6.45 on Tuesday evening to the West Waterford club van and we will get you started. Go on give it a go as this league is an ideal one for beginners to start off with.
“LOCAL” VICTORY FOR JOE
This week we had a field of 56 runners and once again the field was almost split in 2 with 29 runners coming through the finishing tunnel before the clock reached zero. This left 27 runners to finish on the right side of the clock with the lucky person to enter the finish tunnel and get the nod this week was Dungarvan native Joe Barry. 30 points for Joe sees him enter the top 10 for the first time on 82 points while Eoin O Riordan is having a remarkable run in this league and second place here and 29 points sees him consolidate his position at the head of this league. Young Michael Tynan is running really well at the moment and here he finished 3rd to Joe just 3 seconds behind schedule on the night while Michael “Dixie” Deegan showed all his experience to finish just 4 seconds behind the clock but more importantly 27 valuable points sees him take his points total to 88. Finally filling the fifth position here was another man who is running all the leagues in the Friary and improving with every outing and 26 points for Peter McGrath also takes him up to 85 points and joint 5th place.
TOO FAST
Brigid Coffey is an expert at the Colligan Cup style of races and once again she almost got it right and just 1 second separated her from victory once more. Just 2 seconds too fast this week was Dermot O Sullivan while Vincent Tutty too is another who is a regular scorer in this system and his consistency has paid off as he was just 3 seconds too fast this week but he scored 18 valuable points which sees him enter the top 5 in the Champions League Table for the first time since week 2. In joint 5th place on the Champions League Table last week was Paul Brunnock and this week Paul was just 4 seconds too fast but 17 points was his reward for his efforts.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TABLE
Eoin O Riordan strengthened his position at the top of the leader board this week with his second place to winner Joe Barry and his 29 points sees his point’s total rise to 120, with 3 weeks to go Eoin is still on target for a highest points total to date in the Amber Garage Predict Your Time League. Sue Genc retains her second place on 90 points while Michael Deegan has moved up into third place and Paul Brunnock is still in the top 5 with 86 points. Onra Power and Paddy Brunnock dropped out of the top 5 this week but it’s close in the top 10 with Vincent Tutty and Peter Mc Grath both on 85 points and Onra and Paddy are now on 84. After 5 nights the Champions League Table looks like this:
Eoin O Riordan 120 points
Sue Genc 90 points
Michael Deegan 88 points
Paul Brunnock 86 points
Vincent Tutty 85 points
Peter Mc Grath 85 points
SPONSORS AND LEAGUE ORGANISORS
Once again this week thanks to all our league organisers and a special thanks to our hosts in the Friary College and of course our league sponsors Pat, Marion and the Keane family of the Amber Garage on the Youghal road.

WEST WATERFORD AC FINISHERS IN CHURCHTOWN SOUTH 5 MILE
The club had seven athletes at race number 3 in the Ballycotton summer series last Thursday evening, the Churchtown South 5 miler, where there were a huge number of 485 finishers. With many races showing a decline in numbers taking part this year the Ballycotton series is buoyant with ever increasing numbers participating. West Waterford’s Damien Murphy has the flag flying high for his club in this year’s series having won the junior race in all three of the races in the series so far. Damien was unlucky not to break the 30 minute barrier last Thursday when he clocked 30.03 on the night, just a whisker away from another sub 30 minute performance, but never the less a very well done to him and also on his recent rowing exploits for the Cappoquin rowing club where he is rowing at a very high level. Liam Budds is knocking strongly on that sub 30 minute mark also and he was 30.27 all we can say is it’s a coming and it’s a coming soon. Michael Dwyer was another sub 31 minute campaigner when clocking 31.51 great running for Michael. Ted O Leary has all races completed to date also in the series and Ted recorded a time of 32.48. Paul Brunnock ran 34.18 over a distance which must have felt like a jog for ultra-runner Paul and one of two ladies competitors Josie Uí Chuirrin recorded 38.29 while Onra Power ran her 3rd in the series in 40.29. The overall winner on the night was Alan O’Shea Bantry AC in 25.05 and the ladies winner was Rhona Lynch Eagle AC in 30.19.
Final race in series is on Thursday August 25th.with a 7.30 pm starting time.

So much in life seems inflexible and unchangeable, and part of the joy of running and especially racing is the realization that improvement and progress can be achieved.

GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIES
RECORD ENTRY FOR TOURANEENA 5K
The Touraneena 5K for 2011 saw a record entry take part in both the 5k race and the walk. This race has a fantastic reputation for being superbly organised by the wonderful group of volunteers and helpers that ensure that no stone is left unturned in preparation for this race year after year and they are all to be commended for their efforts which most certainly contributed to the success of the race. With a new record entry and a new sponsor in the form of John Skehan of JS Services Ltd, the scene was set for a great race and a great race it was with athletes from near and far ready to take on the challenge of the 5k distance. The decision to change the date of the race to the Friday of the Bank Holiday as opposed to the Monday has paid dividends as the race has now been in excess of 200 runners these past two years and of course the tasty refreshments and the traditional strawberries and ice-cream bring the runners bask each year. The weather was absolutely perfect, the atmosphere was just super and to top it all off the race was won by West Waterford’s Dzintars Klava. Dzintars Klava ran a super and tactical race. From the starting gun it was Shane Mullaney of Thurles that literally powered into the lead and in the chasing pack behind were Brian Swaby, Gary Cantwell, Sean Stilwell, Yevgeniy Chizhikov and Dzintars. The fast pace set by Shane Mullaney was to be short lived as although there is a great downhill at the start of the race it is very quickly replaced by the uphill section of the race and this was where Dzintars reeled in the gap made by Mullaney and upon reaching the main road Mullaney faded and it was left to the others to battle it out. Dzintars who clocked 3.05 for the first km, 3.17 for the second and a fast 3.12 for the third km was now out in front and looked very strong and in pole position to take the race as the others were working hard to maintain the pace. By the fourth km which was clocked at 3.10 Dzintars was in no danger of being caught and he entered the village up the hill on his own to finish with a time of 15.57, the only athlete on the night to clock under 16 minutes. This was great running from Dzintars and a well-deserved win, his second win in the summer series, Dzintars previously won the GSK 5 before an his current form suggests that further wins are in store for him. Waterford’s Brian Swaby finished in second place with a time of 16.14 and in third place was Ciaran Lane of Leevale who finished with a time of 16.27. Plenty of battles were fought throughout the race and in the 0/40 category victory went to Frank Hayes of East Cork. Our own Martin McCarthy was once again the winner of the 0/45 category and it was Tom Burns of Waterford AC that claimed the 0/50 prize and in the 0/55 category the prize went to Clonmel AC athlete, Tommy Cahill. The junior prize was won by Gary Cantwell of KCK in a time of 17.11

ANOTHER FINE WIN FOR CORINNA
Corinna Walsh recorded another fine victory at last week’s Touraneena 5k. She was without question the pre-race favourite and her fine win last Friday means that she now has 3 wins from 4 races and looks set to take another overall victory in this year’s series. From the gun Corinna was to assume leadership of the race and was closely followed by Norma Wall and Martina O’ Dwyer. It was over the final 2k that Corinna really asserted control and pulled away from the chasing athletes and was very strong heading up the final hill and she was delighted not only to have won in style but she also recorded a personal best for the 5k which was a great evening’s work. Norma Wall finished in second place in 18.31 and last year’s winner Martina O’ Dwyer who has just returned from injury was in third place in 18.39. Mary Doolin of St. Joseph’s won the 0/35 category, Diane Behan of Waterford won the 0/40 and Liz Nolan of Waterford AC won the 0/45 with Bernie Prendergrast of WWAC claiming the 0/50 category and her daughter Siobhain was also successful in the junior section. Well done to all.

After race number 5 in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series last Friday evening, The John Skehan Services Touraneena 5K, the club championship tables have been updated and there has been a bit of movement in some of the categories. In the, Men’s over 50 Tom Moroney was first club man home and has taken over the lead. In the ladies over 55, Marie Moore has taken the lead. The championship is confined to fully paid- up club members of West Waterford AC and uses the ten-race summer series programme of races to determine who the best athlete in the club is in the usual race categories. MINNIES FIT4LIFE RUNNING LEAGUE
2 NIGHTS TO GO IN MINNIES FIT4LIFE LEAGUE
Round 6 of the Minnies Fit4Life league took place last Tuesday evening in very good conditions once again and was enjoyed by all 90 participants who took part on the night. There are 2 nights left in this league and still plenty of time to take part so if you feel like getting fit this is the place to start. There is no better place to start a fitness regime than the Friary where runners can start with 1 Lap and then progress on to 2 Laps when they are ready or if not they can stick to the 1 Lap for the full league. If you are not available for the last 2 nights then perhaps you could think about taking part in the upcoming Amber Garage Predict Your Time League which will commence on Tuesday 28th June. This league will again take place over 8 weeks and you can run 1, 2, 3 or 4 Laps, where you can decide how long it will take to complete your chosen distance. The clock will work in reverse and when your chosen time is on the clock your run will commence, the person who crosses the line as the clock strikes zero will be declared the winner.
1 LAP
CIARAN DEE TAKES ONE LAP
Ciarán Dee finished in third place last week in the 1 Lap league and this week he moved up to take top spot in a time of 8.30 closely followed by Anna Rogowska just 9 seconds later in 8.29. Anna is improving her times each week as she takes off valuable seconds while in third place this week was Marc Harty (9.06) who moved from the 3 laps to the 1 lap while Padraig Curran in fourth position also improved his time this week to 9.20. Dzintra Klava broke the magic 10 minute barrier this week finishing in 9.33 an improvement of 34 seconds which is great running while Sandra Heinen also improved her time to 11.11 this week from 11.29 last week. Finally well done to Niamh Budds (11.56) who broke the 12 minute barrier this week for the first time in this league and also to Helen Curran (12.17) who knocked off a full 30 seconds this week.
2 LAPS
GARY MAKES IT FIVE WINS FROM SIX
Gary Collins is in control of the 2 Lap league as he once again took victory this week to make it 5 wins from 6 nights and just needs to complete one more night to guarantee victory here. Gary’s time this week was 13.50 which was also his fastest time of the league to date while in second place once again was Yevgeniy Chizhikov whose time this week was 13.56 and this was Yev’s first time to break the 14 minute barrier since the start of this league so well done to Yev. David Halley finished in third place this week in 15.36 while Ger Cummins was next in 16.45. Consistency seems to be the key to improvements in this league as many of the athletes who had their fastest times this week have all ran all 6 nights of the league to date and these include Catriona Kiely (19.11) who could not break the 20 minute barrier for 3 weeks until last week is now almost down to the 19 minute mark, Diana Chizhikova (20.54) who broke the 21 minute barrier for the first time while Jackie Gleeson (20.59) also did likewise. Paula Reddy (22.33) is another who has ran all 6 nights and her time this week was 30 seconds faster than week 5 while Elizabeth Kennedy stepped up from the 1 Lap to the 2 Lap this week and well done to Liz as she had no problem completing the 2.4 miles in 23.45. Well done to all 24 runners who completed the 2 Lap distance this week and keep up your excellent efforts.
3 LAPS
PETER TAKES 3 LAP VICTORY
Peter Mc Grath is another for whom consistency has been a factor in his times recorded as for 4 weeks in a row he ran 26 minutes while in week 5 he clocked 25.17 and this week this improved to 24.50 and also secured first place in the 3 Lap distance. Ray Burke has finished first on 4 occasions in this league and second on two occasions so is in a good position to take victory here. For the record Ray’s time this week was 24.53 which was just 2 seconds slower than his fastest time to date while Adrian Fitzgerald was in third place here in 25.42 and this was also Adrian’s fastest time to date. Well done to Sheilanne O Donoghue (30.10) who was 35 seconds faster again this week and Sheilanne is now heading for the 30 minute mark while Karen Coleman (34.22) also had her best time to date while Sue Genc (35.54) knocked off over 30 seconds and broke 36 minutes for the first time.
4 LAPS
SEAN TAKES FIRST VICTORY IN MINNIES FIT4LIFE LEAGUE
First to finish this week in the 4 Lap distance was Sean Stilwell who is returning to form and this week Sean recorded 27.51 taking first place almost a full minute ahead of Clashmore native Jimmy Fitzgerald who clocked 28.48 this week. In third place in week 6 of this league was Tom Leahy (30.29) while Ger Murray (30.47) once again went under the 31 minute mark as did Dermot Ryan (30.57). Patrick Lannon (31.24) picked week 6 to record his fastest time of the league as did Ray Hahesy (31.24) while Karen Ryan who is having a great league following all her training for the Bay Run Half Marathon recorded her fastest ever time in the Friary for 4 laps of 33.37 so well done to Karen. Jim Barry (33.55) who last week ran the 4 Laps in 34.02 this week went one better and dropped under the 34 minute mark for the first time while Joe Barry (35.23) looked very comfortable which is great to see as he puts the final preparations to his schedule for the Cork Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday. Another participant of the Minnies Fit4Life League who will be taking part in the Cork Marathon is Paul Brunnock (37.27) as he prepares for his upcoming 100km race and will be running Cork as a training run! We wish the best of luck to both men and of course any other club members who are taking part on Bank Holiday Monday in Cork and of course the Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin. Timmy Foley (37.10) is making great progress each week as his fitness improves while congratulations must go to 2 athletes who broke the 40 minute barrier for the first time this week and these are Aidan Walsh (39.06) and Sinead De Faoite (39.31). Not to be outdone Marie Walsh (41.31) also had a p.b. as did Declan Hayes (41.25) while Claire Twomey who last week recorded 45.15 this week took this time down to 43.55 so well done to Claire.
THANK YOU
Once again this week we say thank you to our sponsors Minnies Bar and Nightclub Abbeyside for all their support and of course our hosts in the Friary College for the use of their grounds for which we are extremely grateful and of course our own band of helpers who make the league possible each week and these are Tony, Michael, Jamie, Liam and Shirley.

Kate Carries the Flag for Ireland
The opening ceremony of the first Youth Olympic Championships was held on Saturday last and the honour of carrying the Irish flag for the opening ceremony went to West Waterford’s Kate Veale. In all there will be almost 30 Irish athletes in action across a range of sports including hockey, boxing, triathlon, sailing, modern pentathlon, tennis, rowing as well as athletics. You can find out the latest new of the event on the Irish Olympic Council website or check out the action at www.youtholympicgames.org or www.youtube.com/olympicsinsingapore.2010 . Kate will be in action on Saturday August 21st. The Europeans will be very strong in the walks. Kate goes into the race with the fourth fastest time of the qualifiers, which she achieved, in the qualifying race in Moscow. Since then Kate has walked even faster when winning her first national senior title in July and with the experience she has gained over 5000m over the summer months she must rank as a serious medal contender for a medal in the walk. We wish Kate every success and we know she will give it her best shot as she does in every event she takes part in.
