Juvenile Notes, 12th May 2008

Another Successful Outing to the County Championships
The second session of the County Track and Field Championships were held on Sunday last at the R.S.C. Our numbers were somewhat depleted by first communion but fifty athletes made it to Waterford to compete and between them won a host of medals in running jumping and throwing events.  West Waterford athletes dominated the throwing starting with a win for Sean Murray in the under 10 Ball Throw. Zoe Scanlan won four events the Discus Javelin and Hammer under 16 and the Junior Discus. Ciara Scanlan won the under 15 Hammer and was second in both the Discus and Javelin. Aaron Meehan was the winner of the under 17 Hammer Shot and Triple Jump. Meg Fitzgerald collected five titles winning the under 17 Junior and Senior Hammers and the under 17 and Senior Discus. Justin Campbell won the under 15 Hammer and Shot and also finished third in the High Jump.  Kate Hickey had a double winning the under 14 Discus and Javelin and later in the day winning the Walk and Ian Kenneally made the trip down from Ballyduff to take the under 18 title.

West Waterford also dominated the Walk events with Aine Power finishing second in the under 14 event. Kate Veale was a clear winning in the under 15 girls giving a master class in the art of walking. Joe Conway was well clear in the under 17 boys.  Stephen Mc Mahon marked his return to the track with five gold medals in hammer shot hurdles 200m & 800m. Claire Collins and Rebecca Maher made it one two for West Waterford in the under 17 800m and Clodagh Gallagher was third in the under 16 800m. David Earley and Jake Beecher both had wins in the High jump under 15 &12. Ellen O Rourke collected a silver and bronze in the under 15 800m and walk as did Cara Mullaney in the under 14 Javelin and discus as did Aine Power in the discus and javelin. Lisa Houlihan won the hurdles and 200m as well as several runner-up medals in the field events. Daniel McCarthy won the steeplechase and was also second in the 200m. Others to win individual medals on the day were Michael Tutty shot, William Quinn hammer, Tim Jefisov hurdles, high and hammer, Richard Casey and Tholm Reddy high jump, Thomas Shaw Hamilton hurdles and shot, Josh Rockett shot,and Robbie Mulligan hurdles, 200m and 800m.

The relays at the end of the day provided great excitement and some very close finishes. Our under 12 boys team of Tholm Reddy Sean Curran Richard Casey and Jake Beecher had a great win.  There was runner up spots for our under 10 girls and boys and under 16 boys. Under 10 girls team was Darina Shanley, Anna Shaw Hamilton, Irene Jesifov and Chloe Beecher. Under 10 boys were Diarmuid Harty, Eoin Ryan Jack Mc Grath and Sean Murray, while David Earley Justin Campbell Tim Jefisov and Michael Tutty made up the under 16 team. Bronze medals went to our under 12 girls Sarah Jane , Taylor Murray, Caragh Mc Carthy and Lorna Cummins our under 12 boys Kevin Crossan Josh Rockett Oisin O’Mahony and Thomas Shaw Hamilton and the under 14 boys team of William Quinn, Robbie Mulligan, Conor Quarry and Stephen Mc Mahon.  Well done to all who travelled and took part on the day.

Kit Kat Munster Schools next Saturday
This event will be held at the University of Limerick on Saturday. Over 120 events will be held on the day with the programme getting under way at 9.30am and the last event concluding at 6.30pm.  It will be a busy day and all events will be finals with the best athletes from north south and east Munster competing against each other. Over 80 athletes representing An Rinn, Ard Scoil, C.B.S., St. Augustines and St. Declans will make the trip to Limerick to compete at this event.  We wish them the best of luck as they attempt to qualify for the Kit Kat All Ireland Schools Finals at the end of the month.

County Primary Schools Final on 22nd
Thursday 22nd is the date and St Augustines the venue for the county final of the Primary School Sports.  Call up for under 8’s will start at 6.15 and the first race will be under way at 6.30.  After the soaking everyone got last Thursday we hope for finer weather for the finals. All medal winners from last week’s western final are through to the county finals.

Training continues on Wed and Fri at 6.pm and we are delighted to see such large numbers coming every week. New members are always welcome.
