The ‘Old’ West Waterford A.C.

The ‘Old’ West Waterford A.C. was formed at meeting in the C.Y.M.S. rooms in Mary Street Dungarvan in November 1973. The club was formed from the existing clubs in the West Waterford area , Dungarvan A.C. , Grange A.C., Kinasalebeg A.C., Lismore A.C., and St. Nicholas A.C. (Ring) as one unit to compete for competition outside of the county. Eddie Moore (Dungarvan A.C.) was elected chairman and John Harty (Ring) was the first secretary. Committee members were Jim Fitzgerald, Tony Shalloe and Michael O’ Halloran (Kinasalebeg), Mossie Hallahan, Jim Troy and E. Hickey (Grange A.C.) and Tony Ryan (Dungarvan A.C.)

John Treacy and West Waterford win Munster Novice Titles 18.11.1973
John Treacy raced to a facile victory in the Munster B.L.E. Novice Cross-Country Championship run over four miles on a yielding course at Leamlara, Co. Cork. Treacy outclassed the big field of 120 runners to hit the tape some 200 yards ahead of his rivals in 21 minutes 59 seconds. Gene Mealy (Cork) was second, Derry McCarthy (Kerry) was third and Treacy’s older brother Ray was fourth. West Waterford won their first Munster title, only a matter of days after being formed. West Waterford scored 55 points, Leevale A.C. were second with 77 points and Premier A.C. of Tipperary were third with 90 points. The West Waterford scorers were John Treacy (Ring) 1st Ray Treacy (Ring) 4th Robbie Walsh (Kinasalebeg) 10th John Barry (Lismore) 15th and James Keane (Lismore) 29th

Clean Sweep for Waterford Athletes at Munster Junior Championships 13.01.1974
At Farranfore, Co. Kerry a glorious chapter in Waterford athletics was written when John Treacy, (West Waterford A.C.) and Waterford made a clean sweep of the Munster Junior Cross-Country Titles. John Treacy won very heavy going and he was followed home by Gerry Deegan (De La Salle A.C.) and Ray Treacy (Leevale A.C.) In the inter county race Waterford beat Cork by 6 points to win an historic title. Their other scoring members were Pat Byrne (Waterford A.C) 8th Tony Shalloe (West Waterford) 10th and Michael Casey (Bally A.C.) 14th. West Waterford won the Club title by 4 points from Leevale A.C. Their scoring four runners were John Treacy, Tony Shalloe, Michael Casey and Tony Ryan.

Third Munster Title for West Waterford 03.02.1974
John Treacy easily retained his Munster Youths B.L.E. cross-country title at Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary. Eddie Hartnett (Cork) was second and Tony Ryan (West Waterford) was third. The club team of Treacy, Ryan, Michael Casey (5th) and Sean Meehan (20th) won from Tipperary Town on the score of 29 points to 52 points. Bernie Prendergast, (St. Nicholas A.C. Ring) was the first lady runner to represent West Waterford at Munster level when she finished a very creditable 6th in the Ladies race.

West Waterford A.C. win Silver Medals at Irish Junior Championships 17.02.1974
West Waterford A.C. finished second to Clonliffe Harriers in the Irish Junior Cross-Country Championships in Mountmellick, Co. Laois. The scoring quartet were John Treacy (2nd) Tony Ryan (8th) Michael Casey (16th) Tony Shalloe (19th) The race was won by Frank Murphy (Clonliffe Harriers). Waterford (59 points) were second to Dublin (48 points) and ahead of Cork (79 points) in the Inter County event.

West Waterford Athletes on Irish Teams 11.3.1974
John Treacy (3rd) and Tony Ryan (60th) were on the Irish Junior Team at the International Cross-Country Championships in Monza, Italy.

1974 Annual General Meeting
Jim Troy (Grange A.C.) was elected chairman of West Waterford A.C. at the A.G.M. in October. Fr. Michael Enright was elected Secretary / Treasurer.

Roger Barron wins Munster Novice and Intermediate Title 23.11.1974
Both Championships were held as one race at St. Augustines College, Dungarvan and Roger Barron was a clear winner from clubmate Tony Ryan and Billy Whyte of Kerry.

Youghal Round The Houses Road Race 31.12.1974
West Waterford A.C. finished second to Leevale A.C. in the New Year’s Eve Youghal road race. The team was John Treacy (1st), Tony Ryan (5th), Roger Barron (8th) and Jimmy Costin (20th)

‘Old’ West Waterford A.C. disbanded the following year.

The ‘Old’ West Waterford A.C. was formed at meeting in the C.Y.M.S. rooms in Mary Street Dungarvan in November 1973. The ‘Old’ West Waterford A.C. disbanded in 1975.
